Making the Hickok-Tutt Shot

Great video. I like the cuts to you shooting a pistol in each hand. Keeps the the story going. :D

Well the video has inspired me to give it a go. My normal shooting distance is 12 to 25 yards My normal target a 12x18 shoot and see silhouette. With the 1851 Navy, Lee 1.3 cc 3f, .380 round ball. Next Monday Ill set the target frame up at 75 yards and give it a go. Standing Weaver stance. Frankly I don't expect much, all though at 12 yards a below the belt line hold results in a nice center of mass group on the silhouette.

I noticed that in the coroner's report, that the ball entered on the right side of the ribs, and exited on the left side of the ribs. So the ball traversed the interior of the chest cavity, which is a very bad way to receive such a hit. At first when reading it sounded as though Tutt might have simply drawn his pistol to have it in his hand as he walked toward Hickok, to be very ready and perhaps with that advantage to avoid any exchange of shots if he was to speak with Hickok. BUT due to the wound locations, entry and exit, Tutt HAD to have been standing with his right side toward Hickok, and with his pistol raised (akin almost to the old Bullseye pistol stance for target shooting), for the bullet to have missed Tutt's arm, hit the chest, go across, and pop out on the other side. I also noted that Tutt moved off on his own a short distance before collapse. Tutt really was engaging Hickok at that long distance.

Like a duel but at 75 paces instead of 10, plus presenting his side to Hickok giving him even a smaller target.


I'm still kind of disappointed in the lack of detail in the trail transcripts.

:what: A 36 caliber ball broke ribs on the entry side traveled thru heart and lungs and broke ribs and exited the body on the left side. And pierced and exited what ever clothing the man was wearing. Damn.
 
I found it was very difficult trying to align the sights on a specific area of the target. The sights and gun itself obscured most of the target frame. I'd align the sight on the bottom center of the frame and then raise the aim until I thought I was in the middle of the target. Arm and body shake accounted for the wandering hits I think. Were I to continue shooting at this distance I'd want sights that allowed me to "balance the ball" on the front sight.

Way beyond my comfort zone its back to the 12 to 25 yard lines for me.
 
I don't know guy I think you did great shooting at that distance off hand and shooting at that distance for the first time. :thumbup:

How many grains of powder is that? :)

Thanks for those words of encouragement Crawdad1. It was fun but a bit frustrating . I'll give it another go with the Walker and 1860 Army some day.

I use the Lee Dipper set. The 1.3 CC on their chart list 3F at 20.7 grains. With a 1/8 felt wad there is still room for more powder, although I haven't tried, the next dipper size is 1.6CC and that's 25.5 grains.

He sure did, and Hickok 45 could also do it with regularity. Lots of top guns out there, my fellow gun club member and regular bi-weekly shooting partner is another one.

Well at least now I know I can hit a man size target out to 75 yards with some regularity, as long as its stationary .;)
 
And that was not the first time Wild Bill either attempted or made that shot. I'm sure during the war he had plenty of opportunity to shoot at that range with a Colt's revolver.
 
Does any know about the Grace Tools that are specifically for the Remington 1858...
I know a guy has designed these, and Grace Tools makes them.
But Grace Tools does'nt sell them, he does, but I don't know his name.
Can anyone please help me?
