+1 for a carbine (along the lines of the old Camp carbines or modern Hi-Point ones, not necessarily an AR style) with interchangeable magwells.
Honestly wouldn't be that hard. Separate block with a couple screws. Magwells would be adjusted for angle and depth.
.22 conversions of more carry-centered guns. Again, perfectly possible in most cases. I for one would be happier to buy a conversion than a whole other gun.
