Shopping for scopes for my savage long range project gun. My budget is in the $500-800 area for scope. I was reading some pretty good things about Sightron S3 series. I think glass is made in Japan? Just wondering if any of you had any experience with this scope. I have never held one. I like using MOA reticles and my options are more limited.

I like my 8-32x56 S-III a lot.

I also have a Sightron 3-16x42 S-Tac I got when the price dropped and like it as well. Well enough that since Midway has them on sale again I back ordered the 5-20x50.

I’m never laid my hands on any Sightron but like you have heard good things about them. No one I know of carries them around where I live.

I have three,-- 2 6.5-20x50 Big Sky (discontinued) and 1 6-24x50, all with the MOA-2 reticle, which, along with their reputation for accurate repeatable adjustments, was the major reason for selecting them. Soon they will be joined by an 8-32x56, because those three have been excellent in use. I think that they are made by Light Optical in Japan, and they have a lifetime warranty. My favorite since I can't afford March.

Yes , looks like they are known for good, reliable tracking. I’m liking what I read! It’s hard to order a scope for $700 or so that you can’t look through! Thats why I ask here, it helps ease my mind.

I know the feeling. I bought my Sightron 8-32X56 the same way, recommended by people whose judgment I trusted.
I back ordered the 5-20x50.
Still showing backordered, but I got my shipping notice/tracking number today. $376 shipped, MOA-02 reticle.

You know, the old saying used to be “whatever the rifle cost, put a scope that cost just as much or more on it”? Do you think this is still true today? I see many $700-$800 rifles wearing scopes around $300-$400 scopes! I believe modern machining and stiff competition has tightened things up.

$300 to $400 today buys a nice scope, nicer than it did 20 years ago IMHO. Glass is (seems to be) cheaper, coatings are better, and competition has made folks step up their game.

IMHO, and I am not scope expert by any means, you need to spend in the neighborhood of $200 for a scope if you expect much, and $300 is better.

Watch for scope sales, closeouts etc. Or pony up and just buy what you want if you just have to have it. I have done both.

The Sightron SIII series scopes are one of the best deals going on quality optics. You can get more bells & whistles with a Vortex Viper PST series, but the glass and tracking isn't as good as the Sightron's.
I have 4 of the SIII's and one SII scopes. The only negative remarks that I have about Sightron is they are behind the times, their reticle choices are few,and they still haven't offered a factory zero stop on their long range scopes.

I’m just sitting here thinking about when I was wondering about the quality of the Sightron scopes a while back. I was messing around today with my new siii 6-24x50 and wanted to post back here. This scope is all what I’ve heard it to be. Very well made , clear , and I shot it a little at 300 yds and it tracks perfect. I’m Very happy ! Thanks for the advise on Sightron, they aren’t very popular in these parts, but make a fine scope. At $800 , it’s not cheap, but I believe it gives $1,000 plus scopes a good run.

I have 2 8-32x56's S3's. Sightron makes an excellent scope with great glass at least on the S3 series that I have on my rifles. I bought my 2 sight unseen online and never regretted the purchase one bit. The scopes track perfectly even when moving many clicks and always returns to zero.
