I bought two lower parts kits that didn't have the trigger parts or pistol grips, so I need to get some triggers/fire control groups. I figured that the pins, springs, magazine release, etc. weren't going to be much different from kit to kit, so for $22 at Brownell's I figured I'd get a partial parts kit and the triggers and pistol grip I'll get exactly what I want.

The two builds I have going right now are:

1. 9mm pistol w/ 10 inch barrel
-This is for 0-125 yards, nothing more. I'm not looking for extreme accuracy as it's a 9mm, so in that regard I'm not looking for a top of the line trigger. I've been thinking about getting an AR Stoner parts kit from Midway as it comes with a trigger and the cheap, crappy pistol grip that I could use to start and upgrade later on.

I don't want to go over $80 on the trigger and would like to keep it cheap, but if there are any triggers out there that are way better for a few bucks more over the Stoner, I'd like to hear about them.

Build #2 is a 5.56 16 inch barrel
- This is going to be for 0-400 yards and I would prefer it have a decent trigger in it. I'm willing to go up to $200 for this and am willing to wait for a sale on a good trigger.

Ruger 452 Elite for the 9mm. Available immediately for ~ $95 if you shop around. Guarentee you'll find one for $80-ish if you wait.

Triggertech in the flavour of your choice for the 556.

Don't buy an inexpensive, run of the mill grip, when a Magpul Ktwo grip is only twenty dollars.

I have an Elftmann flat, VERY nice, kind of expensive. My CMC flat is very nice and half the price. I like cartridge triggers, but put a regular set in rifle two. It came out very nice too. Which was strange, it was terrible in the rifle that was replaced with the CMC.

I hear good things about the Rise and Triggertech triggers.

There is a trigger shoot out on The Truth About Guns. Very informative. Many models of all prices.

The trigger scan doesn’t tell the whole story. My CMC is tight and feels every bit as good as the Elftmann. Both pale against a Savage Target trigger with no blade.:)

The LaRue is indeed awesome.

Forgot to mention the Ruger 452 Elite comes with a very serviceable grip and a standard safety.

I've got two of the Ruger 452 Elite triggers and can't really find any fault. I've also have one of the LaRue MBT's it is a bit smoother than the Ruger.

I want to buy another nice trigger. I am going to buy the LaRue and with it being about $20.00 cheaper than the Ruger it makes that decision easier.

But honestly you couldn't go wrong with either and if I find a deal on another 452 I grab it and not have any remorse.

The LaRue’s are on sale now until the end of the year and theyare the best value going on a quality trigger. The only question is if you want a two stage trigger like that. If you want a single stage, then you need to keep looking. In a single stage, if that is what you want, look for a fast reset, especially if you are going to do any 3gun type matches, as time is everything. I prefer a 2 stage, but have put a single stage on my preban AR15 HBAR, because two stages with the larger pins needed for the pre ban mil spec Colts were just too expensive.

I agree the Larue is superior BUT it doesn't come with the jig, grip, or safety.

These are my first AR's. What's the difference between single stage and two stage triggers?

Single stage is what most people are familiar with; a “wall” with no real movement then a break with 3-7 lbs of pressure. Two stage is a slight resistance and rearward movement of a pound or so followed by a “wall” needing additional force before breaking.

Two stage triggers are better for precision work, such as distance shooting. They allow you to make double sure everything is correct before you completely fire the round. Sight picture, breathing, windage compensation, etc. Generally the final stage will have a break of 3-4 pounds or less, so as not to disrupt the sight picture until the round is fired. For my 308 AR’s and M1A’s that is what I use. A single stage will immediately break and fire the round when you pull the trigger even a small bit. Military single stage usually have a break weight of 8 pounds or so. Specialized aftermarket ones will reduce that down,to 4-6, sometimes adjustable. Single stage are preferred where time is critical, such as 3 gun competitions. From your builds sounds like one of each might be the ticket.

Yeah, sounds like single stage is the way to go for the 9mm build, maybe two stage for the 5.56.

I think for now I'm gonna get the AR Stoner kit with the trigger. Obviously won't be anything special, but it'll get me going and be a spare trigger for a vagabond lower I'm going to put together in the future.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I like the rock river varmint and ruger elite, very similar feel.
The 2 stage has been an ammo saver for me. It lets me catch myself when I yank the trigger. Regroup and concentrate. For predator hunting I’ve noticed the shots I miss are when I don’t feel the second stage. Why a grown man gets so tickled about a coyote is beyond me.

Heck for the 9mm you might consider a polished trigger from psa or the nitride one from bcm.

I like Gieselle triggers. Specifically tue SSA and the 3 gun.
I recently picked up a KE arms single stage drop in trigger for a 45acp ar that I assembled. It has also been a good trigger so far.

Two stage triggers are exactly that, they have two stages. The first stage, or the first part of the travel, is lighter than the sum of the two and will not fire the gun (Why it is safer on a military gun), then the second stage, or the second part of the triggers travel, kicks in with more weight added, then if you continue it fires. They can be rough, or very very good. Generally safer on the battle field or running and gunning in a competition.

The single stage trigger is what you are used to with your bolt guns, lever guns etc you have fired all your life. It does not have that second stage of travel where more weight kicks in. All the precision rifles I have ever seen or fired have them. They can be as light as 2 ounces like on my Benchrest gun, and some intrepid souls have gone lighter. At that pull weight it would be dangerous walking around with it, it is a firing from a set position competition only trigger. Most hunting rifles have a much heavier single stage trigger. Most F-Class and other type precision rifles have heavier triggers than a Benchrest gun, although they are still fairly light.

The two stage triggers like Geissele etc have taken the safe heavy two stage military trigger to new heights and can be very very good while still having the element of safety of the first stage intact. Not as safe as a heavier trigger, but still more margin for safety than a single stage when running around with a loaded gun. No one in their right minds go too low of a pull weight for 3 gun rifles.

If you’re still looking and ready to buy today, here’s another option on a cartridge-style drop-in single-stage with flat face (no curve to trigger): http://www.primaryarms.com/cmc-ar-1...=BANNER_1&utm_campaign=18_07_Ad_36_24HourSale

The price is good for today only, and I have zero experience with CMC.
Great price and trigger. I have two flat models. Bought a third this morning though not needed at this time. It's that good. Sometimes the curved one is same price but not at the moment.
