Before I start I know how you all feel about scopes on lever guns. But I have a Marlin SBL 45-70 gonna put Leupold 30 mm tube,40 mm bell on it with Leupold quick detach rings so irons are handy. What height do you all use ,medium or low for the rings.
Thanks Don

I have a Leopold 2x7 on my guide gun. The lowest rings that fit aren't really low enough because the stock is made for using irons.
It needs a leather cheek rest, I just haven't got one yet.

Leupold QRW Low’s will not clear a Leupold 40mm objective bell on the SBL rail. QRW Mediums will give about 1/16” of clearance, QRW highs will offer 3/16” clearance. On standard 1895’s, low rings will typically clear the hammer, but require the rear sight to be removed or at least folded, so I often end up using mediums anyway. BUT YOUR SBL IS DIFFERENT. My wife runs an SBL with a Leupold VX3i 4.5-14x50mm, either high’s or extra highs. I forget. But the specs on a 40mm Leupold say you’ll need Mediums or Highs in their quick release. That doesn’t tell me whether your rear sight ring will clear the tube or objective bell though, I’ll have to measure the rear sight height to be sure how much room she needs...

Marlin 1895’s REALLY require a cheek riser to work for scopes. I need one even for the irons (not much height between my cheekbones and eye). Victor Company make a very inexpensive plastic saddle which screws to the top of the comb, but admittedly, I typically use a cheap Allen elastic shell holder over a bit of foam rubber, or a Hornady branded stock pack with foam rubber shims underneath so I don’t put screw holes into my levergun combs.

Id never thought/heard of that till you mentioned it a while back, thats what im using on my 7mag and it works well. I did use some double stick tap to keep the pad exactly where i wanted it on the comb, but otherwise perfect.

Yup - little 3M double stick foam tape, stick the foam to the comb, slip the elastic over the top. Dunzo.

I will admit, mine are fairly elaborately formed saddles, cut with tapers and then wrapped in duct tape to hold shape, but the double stick tape still makes a huge difference.

I shoot a lot of Marlins and Rugers - both have way too much comb drop to start with, and I have a very short cheekweld-to-eyeline height, so MOST of my rifles have some sort of riser.

I was given this advice years ago. Use the lowest rings that will allow the scope to clear the rifle. The higher the scope, the further from the bore and the greater the need for a newer stock (or modifying the existing stock).

[QUOTEIMHO, that's way too much scope for a .45-70 levergun.][/QUOTE]

I know but I standardize all my hunting guns with the same optics. Slug gun ,rifle, muzzleloader and now the 1895.

Started using the supplied irons. Eyes had trouble after a bit so I put a C-More on my 1895GS. These days I have a Leupy VX scout scope. You do need some sort of cheek rest pad to make it easy and comfortable to use a scope on a straight stocked levergun.

I had one of those Beartooth cheek risers on one of my shotguns. Was easy to set-up and adjust and was very comfortable to use.

I have low Leupold STD. rings on my 336 but the scope has a 32mm objective. Even with low rings the comb was too low so I took the easy road and bought a Beartooth for it.

Stealing this for the photo - look at how far the objective bell drops below the plane of the 1piece Base. Your SBL can’t do that, so lows like @cdb1 has, or I have in my 336’s and 1895’s won’t work. The extended SBL rail dictates higher rings, math provided above.

I am gonna put up a picture of my straight grip first year production 1895 with a factory Marlin ( light optic works Japan ) scope in low Warne QD rings. I has worked well and the 1.5-5 x 32mm scope is excellent.
