Misplaced generos

Some of you may have followed my recent threads leading up to the purchase of a new, low-priced o/u 12 ga gun for shooting clays. You may remember me mentioning my interest in the sport being stoked by a well-to-do friend who has treated me a couple of times to visits to his club. Once he provided the clays and shells. This last time I brought my own ammo, but the cashless billing system at the club makes it impossible for me to pay directly for my own targets. He refuses to accept any payment for the targets, and of course helping him with the monthly membership fee is out of the question. I have treated him to lunch, but that is way short of his outlay for my shooting. What to do?

There are other places for us to shoot in town which don’t require a membership and take payment on the spot, but he is loyal to his club and prefers taking me there. I can hardly argue with that. But I feel like a mooch. And right now he is the only “partner” I have for clay shooting

I really don’t think I can afford a membership of my own and I don't feel I would get full value out of it. But then again...

I’m tempted to just send him payment electronically to his email address through the bank quick pay system but suspect he might reject it. His wife is more sensible about this kind of stuff and I may be able to get her to convince him to relent.

The last thing I want is to feel I have to stop shooting with him in order to maintain my self-respect. To some extent the issue is moot as there is a four visit limit per year per guest. So beyond that I will be on my own anyway. But still, I would like to pay my way.

Shall we discuss?

I had the same situation with pheasant hunting with a co-worker who was retired and basically working for something to do. I was able to reciprocate somewhat by doing some minor work on his shotgun, and finding 500 chukars for him on short notice, but I think he just wanted a hunting buddy from work. He works somewhere else now, but I might be hunting at that club anyway this fall.

My thought exactly. We were in the store together buying ammo, and I tried to do just that. He didn't want to hear of it. After a while I guess you just have to stop trying, eh?

Go online to Academy and buy him a flat or two of his favorite ammo and give it to him.

Secondly, you bring the ammo for the shooting for both of you.

Actually the ammo angle has the most promise. Thanks to both you and lemaymiami for reinforcing my thoughts about that. I will probably try to get him to shoot mine next time.
 
Don't get him to shoot yours, find out what HE shoots and buy that. If it is $50/flat cheapos or $80/flat Rem STS or Win AA, so be it. And if he reloads (and you don't) give him the empties as well.

I understand, but fear not. He already taught me what to buy. So all I’ve got is what he shoots. He actually shoots Win AA so I do too. But I have found that Win Super Target looks awfully similar: same length, same 1oz weight, same velocity, same pellet sizes. He even said it looks like a good deal.
 
They are not even close to the quality; STs use cheaper soft shot and fast burning powder that increases the recoil pulse; I found Super Target to beat the snot out of me.....

Does the softer shot foul the barrels worse? I would guess so.

Yes, I tried a few boxes of these, fine for close in skeet targets but do have a bit more thump of recoil, the softer shot makes for more stray shot flyers at distance and not as good a pattern. Very few loads can compete with AA's or Rem Premier target loads. Federal papers shells are nice if you have never shot them they have a nice soft even recoil, but you only reload them once.

There shouldn't be any worse fouling as far as shotgun barrels go, especially if the barrel is chrome lined. Other very good quality target ammo, besides STS, AA and Federal Gold Medal are Fiocchi, Game Bore, and some RIOs.

I'll put a different take on this. I've been the friend before just due to circumstances. Having a good friend of mine come along and enjoy my favorite hobby withe me, is worth far more than the money I spent. I understand that you feel the need to "pay back" what's been done for you and I appreciate that. However material goods aren't always the right answer. In my case, my friend is an electrician, and when I needed to wire in my wifes workshop he came over and did it for free while we hung out, and I acted as his helper. So maybe if you have a skill or knowledge he doesn't, share that?
 
Problem solved. I joined my friend’s club and can go there on my own dime now. I’m afraid the exhorbitant wine purchases will have to be throttled back to balance the budget, but that makes sense anyway. I’ve got way more than I can drink. So now I just have to learn how to shoot.
