A buddy of mine is looking at getting a shotgun; one of those Benelli Supernovas. I told him he should look into the Remington 870 but he is set on the Benelli. Now, I don’t shoot scatter guns that often so I couldn’t really give him much advice. He wants an all purpose gun that he can also use at the range for clays. So here comes the catch, he is really afraid of a new AWB and wants to get a pistol grip on his shotgun because of that reason. I told him that they are not as comfy and that I never have seen anyone shoot clays with a pistol grip shotgun, but he is set on it. so the question is, he has been asking me as if I know, is a 24 inch barrel sufficient for shooting clays? Now I don’t know if he is looking at trap or skeet, so I can’t tell you that. I would really appreciate some advice on this one.

Just to reassert this, he is looking for an All-Round-Shootin-Gun, not one for a dedicated purpose.

oh i agree, pistol grips on shotguns are silly, but its not for me...
an awb is an assault weapon ban.
and i am going to clarify with this, this type of stock, not a pure pistol style grip

I love a 24" barrel. I have read posts that state that some ranges won't allow less than a 26" barrel. If the range allows it, that 24' barrel is very handy for clays and hunting.

Although I shoot skeet with a 30" Citori XT, I also have a 24" Supernova that I keep in the bedroom for protection, but also take it to the skeet fields from time to time just for fun. It works well as long as I keep up my end of the bargain, and it is fun to shoot. Plus, the adjustability of the stock is useful for me. I'm not sure what real use a pistol grip would be on a Benelli not used for turkey hunting. Good luck!

I have shot trap with a Benelli Nova 20-gauge with a 24" barrel. Not the best score I ever got, but it was OK. I don't know about the pistol grip, though. When you say "all-around use," I tend to think of wingshooting and clays. The standard stock will be better for both of those.

we live in a shotgun state...
for deer, vermin, birds, and everything else....
the only thing you can use a rifle for here is target shooting and coyotes

I like the 24" barrel, especially on the Nova because the receiver is a bit longer on those guns. If you campare one side by side with a 26" barrel 870 the overall length will be the same. Makes a good all around length for me.

To me the pistol grip is fine for turkey, deer or self defense but would think it is a handicap for clays or wing shooting. For a general purpose gun I would stay with a regular stock.

JM, that is what i was thinking and told him. But its not my gun so I wont worry about it. People will get what they like. The thing is, he kept asking me about barrel length and I had no answer.
thanks for the info
