My son, Little Loudmouth and I
attended a turkey shoot/fundraiser at one of the clubs I belong to last Sunday afterhoon.

The first thing we did was wander over to the trap range. One of the listed events was a Quail Walk. It was $2 per five shots, so I handed over the dinero. (My son used to shoot the kids event on the indoor range, but this year he seems to have outgrown it!)

LL got out his J.C. Higgins M20 and stuffed five Remington eight shot shells into his pants pocket. He'd never done one of these before so I suggested he ask the guy running the event how it worked. That precipitated a change of scorers so the guy LL asked the question could walk him through the shoot.

Five guys went to the line. LL was in the second postion, so he got to see one target thrown before his turn. He walked up and up some more and his target was a long shot to the right. LL broke it into several chunks.

(The J. C. Higgins came with one choke tube, full. The guy in charge had wanted to give LL a gun that was more open choked. LL wasn't happy with that. I politely told the guy to let him shoot his own gun with the full choke. It was perfect for the long shot, IMO. The guy was just trying to be helpful, but it would have broken LL's bond with his gun. Not a good thing.)

LL missed the next three clays. The consensus was that he was shooting over them as they dropped down. Several other shooters did the same. His last clay was another throw to the right. LL chunked it up again.
I figure when we do see some grouse I'm going to have him take all the right crossing shots. LL has put about two boxes of shells through the J.C. Higgins, so far. He's doing real well, I think.

LL went on to shoot .22 silhouette with a 10/22, the 400 yard gong with my AR clone, and benchrest .22 with a club gun. He didn't win a turkey, but came close to winning a chicken. He exhibited good, safe gun handling in all events. His Mom missed the shotgun shooting, but did see him shoot the rifle events.

LL made me proud on Sunday. (This is not an uncommon thing, but seeing him do well on the range, or in the woods, always gives me an extra smile.)

I'm already looking forward to next year.

Nice story, I still remember the first time I took my son out. Those memories are forever.
