SAA Clones?

The calvary twist was obviously used in the days before the Four Laws were drilled into us.

I dont see an issue with it unless you are trying to get fancy and thumb the hammer back before you are pointed down range at a target. A single action takes a lot of steps to get into play, or at least an arrant finger in the guard isn't going to make it go off the way other pistols/revolvers could.

I'm ambidextrous. I usually wear my saa cross draw on my left. However, my holster is canted enough that I can do a calvary twist with my left quite easily.

Yes that's what happens in a twist draw. I've read the pistol was worn on the right hip, butt forward for a left hand draw. The sword was used with the right [strong] hand. Am I mistaken?
That's what would happen if the saber and pistol were to be used at the same time. However, it would be hard to do this while also controlling the horse, so it was probably never done. Therefore, the pistol would be drawn with the right hand with a twist draw.

ETA: The M1913 "Patton" cavalry saber was attached to the saddle, not the man. By that time, the M1911 pistol was being carried in the normal fashion, on the right side with butt to the rear. (When carrying the M1917 Colt or Smith & Wesson revolvers, they reverted to butt-forward carry using the M1909 holster.)

If you are referring to the Cavalry Twist, that is a different story.

A friend of mine wears both his revolvers butt forward in CAS and always uses the Cavalry twist. He does not have any problems, and does not 'flag' his guts, whatever that means.

I carried a S&W 4" M29 for 8 years. Due to a shoulder problem I couldn't draw strong side butt to the rear if the sixgun was carried high. I carried the S&W high & tight with butt forward. When drawing that way as I twisted the sixgun the butt was pointed away & the barrel passed toward my body.

This is what I was agreeing to concerning "flag the gutt". I guess if you waited longer into the draw & pushed the sixgun forward keeping the barrel toward the ground you could twist it without pointing toward the body.

I'm not here to make any point but my own on how it worked for me & how I understood the term: flag the gutt. :):):)

As I expected, Cabelas didn't have the gun(s) I wanted, just the Uberti Cattleman II.

It looks like if I want a four click clone, I'm going to have to order it.

Most of my searching has been in the middle of the night at work using my tablet.

Apparently, certain things don't work as well on Bud's web site using the tablet as with a real PC.

Getting the Cimarron Frontier (Pietta) was beginning to look like a real project. I was thinking I might punt and get a nickeled .38 Super auto (slightly less of a project) instead.

Then the other day, I searched again using this PC. Low and behold, not only did I find the gun I wanted at Bud's, it was in stock, AND when I searched for a local dealer, not only did I get a result, it was the shop I was going to try to order through in the first place.

I've got a couple of gun shows to hit in the next two weeks. If neither of them has what I want, I'll leave the second one, drive up the street an eighth of a mile and go to the dealer and see about ordering the Cimarrron.

Buy a Cimarron Frontier (made by Pietta) with a 7 1/2" barrel (mine has the 5 1/2" barrel). It has the traditional 4-click action and the standard Colt style firing pin. Really an excellent gun and one of the few that still uses the traditional C-O-L-T action. It does have the longer than normal cylinder bushing pin that that is easy to fix if you need to. I just ignore it and don't insert the pin that far in.

I have a Great Western 2 with the “safety” longer cylinder pin- I replaced it with a NOS actual colt pin I got off numrich arms. Dropped right in... apparently all colt 1873 2nd gen parts are compatible.... I even considered getting a colt barrel to swap to get rid of the western 2 rollmarks...

I just came back from a gun show and two gun stores. No Piettas at all.

One more gun show next Saturday. If there's nothing there, I go across the street to one of the gun stores I hit today and order the gun. Alternatively, I order the gun from Bud's and have it shipped there since Bud's lists them as a dealer.

I didn't think anyone beat Bud's prices, but if you want a Pietta, Dixie Gun Works has nine Pietta's under $400

  1. Old model (screw instead of push button cylinder retention, "bullseye" ejector knob, four click cocking, etc.)
  2. Blued with case hardened frame
  3. 7 1/2" barrel
  4. .45 Colt
Bud's has the Cimarron Frontier that meets those criteria.

Ah...the black powder frame.

I have a Cimarron Model P/black powder frame in .44 Special. I'm sure you know, but these come with the tiny V rear sights and the tapered front sights. Authentic, but not friendly for those of us with over 50 eyes. I had the rear milled to a .125" groove and change the front to a square version. Much better!

Yeah, I know about the sights. I want the SAA experience without spending $2,000 for it. From what I've seen, you can't get a new Colt anymore, even if you're willing to pay the price.

Just came back from the show and the best gun store in the area.

No 7 1/2" Piettas at the show that I saw.

I went to the store up the road. They could get me the gun, but NOT in 7 1/2". 4 1/2" and 5 1/2" only.

I'm reconsidering my options.

I may go with a nickel M1911 in .38 Super instead.
