Leupold VX-2 vs Weaver Grand Slam.

VX-2 glass is decent enough by comparison; at what distance were you viewing and at what power? Leupolds tend not to focus well at too close a range.

My normal procedure is lowest magnification setting, dark room, and pointed into a lighted space. That gives maximum contrast between crosshairs and background. Then of course loosen the lock ring and adjust the focus knob.

Not sure which “focus” you were referring to but that would be both explained best I know.

I have both a Weaver Super Slam 2 -10 x 42 and a refurbished Leupold VX -2 3 - 9 x 40 that I got from Midway. I must say that I have fiddled with the cross hair focus on the Leupold quite a bit. I just took a look through it and it seemed OK. I really like the Weaver. The glass is at least as good as the Leupold, maybe even a little better. Some of the other features are nice, such as zeroable turrets. To me the only downside is that it is several ounces heavier than your average Leupold.

I've bought several entry level Leupold 3 - 9's over the years for my kids when they started hunting, and think that they are better than the current crop at the bottom of their product line. I suspect that they are striving to be price competitive and have sacrificed some quality to do so. You still can't beat the warranty and I like to support American companies as best I can.

I've never had any of the higher end scopes. Vortex viper, grand slam, vx2 are as nice as I go. That said, I find Leupold to be a nice size, but optically VERY overrated. If size wasn't a consideration, I'd take a grand slam over a vx 2 every time. The vx2 is fine, but for the same price range there are a few other scopes I'd rather have. (Monarch, viper, grand slam, sightron s2 big sky......)

What’s with the Weaver Kaspa models? Is that their low end offerings? I’ve used a few Nikons, Burris and others but am in the market for a decent scope for an AR in 7.62x39

Ya, Kaspa is their lowest tier line I believe. That being said, I have one of the 2.5-10x Kaspa Tacticals on my Savage 10 and man am I impressed for the price. I got mine on sale at NatchezSS.

Both are discontinued scopes. Weaver is done, Vista Outdoor is shutting down Weaver scopes (still making rings, etc.), because it directly competes with their Bushnell brand.

A long-time member of Rimfire Central posted the message in italics below a couple of weeks ago. It fits with the fact that the various T-series, V-series, Grand Slams, and Super Slams have been gradually disappearing from the big sellers' websites over the past few months, not to come back in stock. More recently, the lower end stuff like Kaspas and 40/44s have been going out of stock. I contacted Weaver myself a few months ago to inquire about the 4-16 Grand Slams and the V-24, and was told that those had been discontinued.

Weaver has ceased production of optical products and is only making scope mounts and accessories at this time. Questions on optics production should be directed to Bushnell Optics.
