all my levers have peeps. i am looking for a nie 700 and FN for the nice peeps i got.
Skinner on my Henry .22 and Xs on my Marlin 45-70 both are great.
I think the only lever action rifle I would put a scope on would be something like the Henry Long Ranger or the Winchester BLR, which are chambered for longer range cartridges like the .308 Win. Most lever actions, chambered in .30-30, .35, .45-70, .357 or .44 mag should have peep sights.
i have also hit deer pretty fare out to. my best was around 245 or 250, the 45/70 just has to hit the deer to kill, i was using the 250 barnes then with my siamese mauser.I use the forums through the mobile platform, and can’t see the post numbers in the threads, but I’ll assume the above post is directed towards mine.
Even if it’s not...
Sure, shooting short ranges is easier than shooting long ranges while hunting, but I think @mustanger98 has a very narrow understanding of the capabilities of the 45-70, if he really thinks shooting 200-300 yards with a 45-70 is “a different kind of shooting.
An example to that point, the buck below was killed with a single shot to the heart with an 1895 Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 shooting 325grn Hornady Leverevolution factory ammo at a paltry 1795fps, with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm on top, supported on the top of a fencepost....
At 253yards...

Steep trajectory let's you shoot over obstacles! Kinda like a none explody mortar!....or an arrow....not as much fun.Varminterror, look back at the trajectory you describe for your .45-70... for inside 300yds, it's pretty tall compared to some I'm talking about. I was under the impression you're maybe using a grid reticle. I never said its not doable if you know range and trajectory... just more to figure than I was talking about back upthread. And the long range I'm thinking of is beyond 300yds... out where most of us wouldn't normally try for a deer... as distance increases, trajectory's more like an artillery shell dropping in.
haha i laughed when i read that. there is a guy on youtube who was hitting a gong at 1000yards with a guide gun, standing. he hit it quite a few times.Steep trajectory let's you shoot over obstacles! Kinda like a none explody mortar!....or an arrow....not as much fun.
The rifles and cartridges post #52 concerns are more likely capable of a 200-300yd PBZ within a deer's vital zone than are anything .45-70 zero'd that far.
well, let's say the trajectory is no higher than +5" with a far zero of 200-250yds. To that distance, why would you need to hold over?
