.22 cal HP ammo shortage?

Depends where youre at.

.22 still somewhat common around these parts. 9mm and .223 are making themselves scarce.

Remember that when all hell breaks loose (like now) ammo manufacturers will scale back or stop rimfire production to concentrate on more profitable centerfire products which are competing for the same raw materials and shipping space.

Here in south central Texas it began when the Corona lock downs went into effect. It was bad but the stores here were restocking empty shelves as fast as possible. No problem getting .22 but 9mm, 45 ACP and .223/556 were hit and miss.

Now, since the riots and looting, it's worse here than the ammo shortage was five six years ago. Shelves are bare, empty, nada. Shotgun slugs and buckshot also all gone.

Something else I noticed was over at Bud's Guns they usually stock 1,164 Glock models. Earlier today I noticed they were sold out with the exception of seven models. Not a Glock guy but I believe this is evidence that we, in the firearm community, have never experienced a run on firearms and ammunition as there is now.

Your mileage may vary, but I have a ruger SR22 and I find that bullet weight is more important than velocity for it to function. I can actually shoot CCI subsonic 40 grain segmented hollow points out of it, but it would not cycle 32 grain hyper velocity ammo reliably. I know yours is an LCP but I figure ruger .22's will behave similarly.

My preferred ammo these days has been Aguila 38gr HP. I get it from outdoorlimited. They have it in stock for $22 a brick of 500. They usually ship quickly, but my last order took a week to ship. It’s getting nuts.

The Ruger manual does not state HV ammo. Did you call them? If the gun cannot shoot standard velocity, I would not be interested.I have been receiving 22.cal ammo on a weekly basis now for months. I have two orders coming in today with about 2,000 rds. I am conserving most of my 9mm and training with 22.cal. Favorite gun is the LCR22. Shoots anything.
My SR22 shoots anything as well, never once had a problem with ammo.
All that said, while 9mm seems to be getting shorter and shorter in supply, I see a trend now of the virus now moving on to rimfire.

Mid march. All you hear in the news is uncertainty. Election. Virus. Protests. It's 3+ years of pent up supply that's being sold in the last year. The historic low prices and awesome availability couldn't last forever. Where are all the threads about too many choices and incredibly low prices between November 2016 and February 2020?

I started a thread in ammo at Academy. I’m in the email notification lists for several types of ammo. They’ve had the best prices when available and availability has been spotty, but you can get it if you keep an eye out.

Trying checking these:
- Target Sports USA
- Bud's Gun Shop
- Academy Sports + Outdoors
- Midway USA
- Killough Shooting Sports (carries Eley, including their HV HP round)
Also, play around on the ammoseek search engine. It's a handy tool once you get used to running it.

That's why you stack it high and deep when cheap and available.

Good luck. I bought quite a bit of what I have online during one of the earlier shortages when it popped up from time to time, using ammoseek and similar sites to locate it. I don't feel I overpaid for much of it at all (that opinion might change when I finally dig into the 1300-round bucket of RGBs I bought at Bass Pro in around 2014.)

If one is wiling to look around a lot locally and use the web, too, there's still decent ammo at decent prices to be had.
I picked up 1,200 rounds (4 boxes of 300) of Eley Action .22lr -- 40 grain at 1090 fps -- for about 5.5 cents per round from Killough Shooting Sports website the other day. Could have bought more, but this is my first time with this ammo and thought I'd keep the purchase relatively modest.
Locally, I scored five 100-count sleeves of CCI Minimag round nose at $8 per box and five 325-count boxes of Federal Auto Match at $19 each at Academy on Friday. (Yes, I do check there often, and Friday's stock was unusually more plentiful than usual.)
Yep, there's a demand-induced shortage of sorts on, for sure, but some persistent industry can get one around it. We're not in quite the pickle we were in the shortage that begain late 2012, IMO.

In modern America we get spoiled because we’ve always for the most part been able to hop in our vehicles, make a relatively short drive, and buy anything we want. Food, guns or ammo, whatever. Instant gratification. It will always be there.

We are rapidly reaching the point in time where this is changing. In just the past decade we’ve had multiple times ammo/firearm shortages. Sit for a few minutes and think of the shortage of nearly everything in the past few months. People went berserk.

Last time before this was just a few years ago, I would have been called a hoarder because I had thousands of rounds on hand.

I have a bunch of SV ammo for my bolt rifles; so I'm good there. My semi pistols shoot most ammo OK. My semi rifle it a little more particular. Having shot lots of semi pistols/rifles and asking the question, which ammo works best?, The answer is always the same; it depends on the gun. My new Bergara BXR doesn't like Eley Contact, but lucky for me it loves Federal AutoMatch, both accuracy and cycling, at one third the price. I found plenty of Fed AutoMatch at Fin Feather Fur Outfitters so I bought a bunch. Usually CCI MiniMags work in almost everything and it's decent ammo. But, yeah, I think it is wise, not hoarding, to build a large stash. In addition, with many of my other activities being closed of because of the Wuhan virus and our hysterical reaction ro it, I'm shooting a lot more. My safe outdoor rifle/pistol range is open!!

I agree that building a good stash is a prudent thing to do. It is nice to be able to burn through a couple hundred rounds in a session without having to worry about it.

As to what feeds and what doesn’t, I have determined that I will no longer try any 22 hp in a repeating rifle.
To make life really simple , I have purchased CCI MiniMag exclusively for several years now. No more bargain bricks.

Was at a club I belong to in east central Illinois today as the club nearest me in west central Indiana was running a match. After my range time, I stopped at the nearby Wally to check the .22lr situation there. Mainly I was just curious; my own stock is pretty good.
They had CCI Standard Velocity, MiniMags and Stingers. Also had Federal Auto Match, Winchester 333s and in the red sleeves and some 525 Rem Golden Bullets. Didn't seem to be huge cache of any of 'em, but a decent amount.
Guess it all varies by region and the day/time you stop in.

Things are certainly getting crazy, expect it to get worse between now and November.

I dont shoot alot of .22 so I'm not as concerned about that but every little bit helps.

I'm more concerned with .223, 10mm and 9mm. I shoot 9 the most as I practice, train, carry and compete with it, so I go through quite a bit. Trying to maintain a few thousand on hand during these times is becoming difficult and tiresome.

Over the past 42 years, I have yet to find a .22 LR cartridge that did not identify itself as "high velocity"

Surely, I'm missing something here.
What about, say, CCI Standard Velocity. Or Aguila Standard Velocity? Or Fiocchi Standard Velocity?
Or every .22lr round by any maker with "subsonic" or "quiet" in its name?
