I don't recall there being a surcharge, just the usual shipping costs, but its been awhile since I shipped ammo last..

You have to ID the box with the proper markings for small arms ammo, but that's it.

No extra charge, no HazMat fee, must go Ground. Don't let them try to snow you otherwise. Most of their employees have no idea what they're talking about.

There's no surcharge for ORMD, but it's a PITA. You have go to a depot or pay for pickup (storefront's won't do) and you'll likely work through 3-4 people before finding one who admits the possibility that they ship thousands of packages of ammo each day.

Just buy ammo shipped.

I shipped some earlier this week and another batch a couple weeks prior to that. As others have indicated, it's definitely doable. Assuming you're sending her less than 66 pounds of ammo in the package, just print a "Cartridges, Small Arms ORM-D" label from an online image and apply it to the box, label it, and (the part that may be a PITA if you don't have one that is convenient to you) drop it off at a UPS Customer Center at an operational facility (that's a corporate service center, NOT a regular UPS store). Or, for about $11 additional, you can schedule a pickup at your place.

Fedex is generally cheaper and faster than UPS. Generally fedex is 30% cheaper IMHO.

Sign up for a free account on the Fedex website and you instantly save 8-16% depending on service type.

Weight your package to the nearest pound and always round up. Get package dimensions to the nearest inch, rounding up. Type it all in and print a label and ORM-D labels and pack it up good. More padding the better. Then just drop it off at the local Fedex ground hub. I literally set packages on the counter and tell them im just dropping it off. Takes 15 seconds.

That image does indicate ORM-D. Its been in use for over a decade. In fact, the "ORM-D Small Arms Cartridges" label can't be used after 12/31/2020. DOT has been trying to phase it out for years.

What Happens to ORM-D Shipments on January 1, 2021?
Here’s some good news: For the most part, the same materials, in the same quantities, in the same packaging, will continue to qualify for relief under US DOT’s limited quantity regulations after ORM-D is phased out. When PHMSA began the ORM-D phase out in 2011, they also expanded the limited quantity exceptions to include the same reliefs provided for ORM-D.

Limited quantity shipments are typically excepted from UN specification packaging, hazmat labels, shipping papers, and hazmat placards.

What will change is the label you affix to your packages. Ground shipments of limited quantities must carry the blank limited quantity mark pictured below. Limited quantity air shipments are already required to display the “Y” limited quantity marking shown below.

Both placards are available for printing via the UPS website. The two times I've shipped live ammunition I used the blue background choice, one with UPS & once with FedEx. Both times that placard didn't result in any drama at the counter when I submitted the package for shipment here in a large city. Both times there were very specific locations where such a package could be taken and both times it was in a light industrial area (but not the same light industrial area UPS vs FedEx) where I dropped my packages off.

Packages of ammunition I've purchased online shipped to my door have arrived with one or the other placard no specific preference I've noted for one vs the other that I've received thus far among various merchants.

FWIW - I have occasionally just drawn the ORMD label with a Sharpie, directly on the package. Never got a comment.
