My Newly Acquired German P220

Goo morning all.

Friday night was a fruitful (I think) trip to my absolute favorite gun shop. I had gone in planning on only buying some ammo and 30 round AR mags, but while I was in there, something else caught my eye...a set of bar dot Sig sights. They were mounted to a P220 marked Made in Germany on the right slide. No wear to speak of, in the original blue plastic clamshell box and with 4 magazines (two original with the flat metal base pad and two of the newer mags with the slightly extended rubber base pads). There's a very slight bit of wear to the sides of the barrel where it interfaces to the slide, no significant wear to the frame where it contacts the slide. The lockup is good. There is no wear to the blued finish, and every thing functions as it should. It was $620 out the door. For those of you who are more in the know with the older Sigs, did I do okay there? I feel like it was a good price given what I see on Gun Broker for similar condition pistols of the same vintage.

My West German produced ex-Denver Metro police gun was $425 nearly 5 years ago. It came with one mag and suitably worn finish.

I paid more for my German P220. Today that's a solid deal IMO. Does it have a rounded or pointed hammer?

I just bought a Sig P220 Carry w/ three mags & box as LEO trade-in "dealer's choice" from Mosin Crate for $619 so I'd say you did pretty good all right. It's still on the way here, so I don't know what condition it's going to be in. No doubt not as nice as yours. As an LEO trade-in chances are my grips and finish will be pretty well worn but the bore and action will be in great shape, as is typical for such a provenance. Nice going, for sure. :thumbup:

Rounded hammer. I gather that its a second generation P220 since it has the rubberized pebble texture and it's marked as Exeter NH on the left side of the slide as opposed to Sigarms on the right

This one is mine, picked up from the LGS for a good price.

Now, magazines are middling interesting to find--these were the first two I found (I now have two more)

What does "Assembled by RPS" signify?

"Made in Germany" indicates that it was manufactured post-1990...after the reunification of Germany. The blue box would be period correct. I've don't think I've ever seen the bar-dot sights on such a new 220

The 8-round magazines with the plastic bumpers would be correct for the pistol...likely marked "Made in Italy". The magazines with the flat metal bottoms...either dovetailed or zippered backs...hold 7-rounds and are older and made in Germany

If the gun has been shot much the wear will be on the top and bottom of the barrel where it locks up with the front of the slide

I'd say it was a very fair price. A picture would tell us a lot more but it sounds like it is a "current production" model...or at least the last time they made a "plain jane" 220

As Joe Biden would say, "Come on, man!" Yeah, you know it's a great price for a lightly used P-220.

What's the date code on it? (two letters on the bottom of the dust cover near the front)
Serrated trigger?

Yeah, the heel catches on the flat metal base, the side slots are "ignored' for holding.

That's convoluted. I've seen it asserted that RPS is a Canadian outfit that converted 9mm to .38 super--but the number of .45acp seen in the wild argues against that.
Also asserted is that R. P. Scherer GmbH was located in Eberach. Which was where one of Sauer's satellite factories was located, before the consolidation into SIG-Sauer GmbH by Lüke. This looks to make far more sense.

Mine has an 84 proofmark on the slide, grips that were made in 87

I could be wrong, but I'd thought there was one serial-number series into 1995 that had the German proof marks. Time to do some research, maybe?

To my knowledge, none of the 220s manufactured during that period had German Proof Marks

That's odd. Those guns were also for sale in Germany and other CIP countries and had to be proofed by law before being sold to the public.
