For those who like 7mms

When I was fifteen I bought a 7X57 Remington Rollng Block rifle complete with bayonet for 14 dollars from Hunter's Lodge in Alexandria, VA. Pulled about fifty bullets from some military ammo, loaded them back up with data from my Lyman manual, on the very low side, and shot it. I went on to purchase one of something every week from them and when I went to college I had about fifty nice old military rifles and carbines. Sold them one or two at a time for tuition money, sometimes making 1000%. Today, I hate to think what those things would bring, especially the 1911s, Smith Hand Ejectors, 1903A1, and a few others. I guess the education was worth it. I'm retired, no debt, have my own until land and enough guns I have trouble deciding what to carry.
That 7 was my first "big" centerfire rifle after my hornet I loaded for. I'd shoot it still if I had it. Still have the dies.

I haven't seen any one mention Roy's 7mm Weatherby Mag (unless I missed it) ?

Anybody have any love or hate for it?
Never shot one. Just wondering what you guys thought of it. I know that there is a lot of love out there for his 257 mag.
I had a hunting buddy that used a 7mm Weatherby Mag for pronghorns, mule deer and elk. He did alright with it, but as a non-handloader, he paid through the nose for ammo when and if he could find it around these parts. I used to give him a pretty hard time about that. But the truth is, I like the 7mm Weatherby Mag. Then again, I'm a handloader.:)

Over the years of collecting surplus guns, I never looked for rifles in 7mm Mauser. Then one day a made a trade for some stock work and ended up with a VZ24 barreled action and a Brazilian 1908 that was missing some parts.
Here’s the VZ24. I got a stock and the rest of the parts, except some of the bolt parts.

Here’s the 1908. It still need a bolt and floorplate, and a good cleaning.

The 7mm WSM and .28 Nosler are my favorite 7mms. I've got by far the most use on the 7mm WSM. As far as why, the bullets have high sectional densities and high BCs (unlike the comparatively useless .270). It's suitable for western elk, which is the tag I can easily pull every year. The WSM comes in a lightweight CRF rifle (the short action Kimber 8400) that is suitable for high country carry. The wind drift (which drives max effective range due to unavoidable wind mis-estimation, especially on cross-canyon shots) is exceptionally low. Recoil is negligible. It's hard to imagine a better high country elk rifle.

I love the 7wsm, shame it was not popular. Any particular load you prefer.

I think despite not being very popular, either it or a 7mm-300WSM will experience a resurgence over time. I already see the rifles pulling a premium. In that way it's like the 10mm. If the 7mm WSM didn't exist, we'd have to invent it.

Historically I've shot a 175gr Weldcore or 175 A-Frame using Retumbo at about 2950 in a 24". I'm now experimenting with the 155gr Terminal Ascent with Retumbo as well. Max velocity is 3190 but accuracy load is TBD.

I am tempted to try the 168 nosler ablr but there real deep in the case. I would like to find a 150-160 high bc bullet to try. If I can find a range I can use more often I'd load some hotter rounds, I've been sticking to the middle load data. I need to get some new brass soon, like to compare the wsm with the 6.5 prc I have.

it doesn't really hurt anything to have the tail of the bullet in the case. if it's not, you're not using a long enough bullet :D.

The 155 Terminal Ascent seems to be decently accurate and the TBBC line as a whole has incredible terminal performance (far better than the ABLR and even the regular AB) although I have yet to shoot an animal with the .284 155gr specifically. It is very long though.

I've shot a few deer with 150gr hornady or Winchester really don't know they were seconds, but shot great. I'd just like a bullet and load to separate the 7wsm from my 7x57 and Ai.

My Browning has shot everything very well, don't know if it will stabilize the 168. Wish I had a Winchester crf in wsm,

I don't have any WSM experience, but I read a lot of the 7mm WSM mag box restricting the COAL to the cartridges full potential with heavies (funny coming from a 284win short action owner!) And I kind of figured if I was going to get a WSM I would go right for the 325, taking advantage of being able to shoot 220's and 250's with the large case capacity. Being they are larger dia at 0.323" I look at it as the least amount of case crowding in the heaviest bullets. (slightly shorter bullets than 30 cal)

I view the 325 as an inside 400yds rifle, not as a "long" range as its little cousins are more suited

But don't get me wrong, I would take a 7wsm for a sweet deal!

Really depends on the bullet. The high bc bullets are much longer then even a spire point of the same weight. I have some 175 round nose I could run long and still fit in the mag. They may explode when they hit a animal tho.

With that ruger american switch barrel im working on i considered a 7mm WBY, and much like the .270WBY, if i drop the .300wm barrel it would be a possible option. Performance is slightly better than the ubiquitous 7rm, but for the most part only real Whebyrs choose it i guess, Ive only ever seen one.

My two favorite Hunting rifles are in 7mm-08 and both shooting 140 Sierra GKs at less than MOA. I can't remember where but someone was talking about availability of ammo. I stopped by Academy the other day and there was not a box of 308 to be had but a good selection of 7-08 was available. Of course I reload so no need to purchase...

Hi Everyone,

I recently posted the following message about what I believe is a M24. However, I would like so triple check the following: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...de-for-the-mexican-army.877977/#post-11704357

1. Is this truly a M24 Mauser and not a M30 (although the date under the Mexican Crest says 1924, someone told it may be an M30)
2. Is the caliber of this Mauser 7x57 Masuer? If so,
3. Is it safe to use Partizan's 139gr 7x57 Mauser ammo?
