i have a savage 111 in 300rum i dont have much use for right now if we had elk or me the money id keep it around. my dad has a browning ablot in 7wsm and wants to trade me for my savage. the abolt is a early wsm gun think its a composite stalker but does not say on the barrel syn stock matte finish bbl. he has dies 2 boxes of ammo and about 50 once fired brass. no scope on ether gun. i love me my 7mms its more gun then i need but if i hunt some big fields it will reach out better then my 7x57. just like to see what you would do. i think ill trade he.

Browning, and your right, that is a composite stalker.
I own both, and ill always chose an Abolt over a Savage....unless the abolt is in a cartridge i REALLY dont like. All around nicer gun than the Savage, tho the savage MAY actually be more accurate on average.

Cartridge wise, yes the 7 WSM is probably a bit much for the hunting youve described before, but not nearly so bad as that RUM.

thanks the abolt was a good shooter last i seen about 15 years ago. im thinking of making it my rainy day gun. i can down load it with 150 or 160 at like 2700 to 2800 and be fine. need to find a good powder for it im guessing any slower then 4350 is good.

lemme run it thru quickloads but im betting 4350 should be a good one for its case capacity at that velocity.

Yeah that should produce a decent fill and get the velocity range your looking for.

The WSM Abolts we're all short action I believe, Ive never seen one that wasn't.

The gold triggers are just kinda a Browning "thing"
Some of the double barrel shotguns I think had some difference in their triggers, but the rifles do not. Again as far as I know.

My Abolts trigger is better than most of it's contemporaries, and about on par with the surprisingly good (comparatively) factory triggers most guns have now.

I've had several 7mm and 30 caliber magnum rifles over the years. I have no issue with someone using one if they want to, but after a careful assessment of reality sold mine. I have a couple of 30-06 rifles that I've had for decades with too much history to sell, but I came to the conclusion they were bigger than I needed for the vast majority of my hunting.

My primary rifles now are 308, but anything in that class, (7-08, 260, 6.5CM,or 7X57) would be just as good. With my handloads, or some of the better factory loads with todays premium bullets I'd not feel handicapped shooting elk at 400 yards with any of those cartridges. That is about the limit of my comfort zone when shooting at game, and elk is the biggest animal I'll ever hunt. The 30-06, 270, 280 class of cartridges would add a little bit of insurance by hitting a little harder. But I just didn't see where any of the magnums started to have an edge until you start taking 600 yard shots, and that is just farther than I feel comfortable shooting at game.

If I were going back to anything with "magnum" on the headstamp it would be one of the WSM's. I had a 300 WSM for a while and found it accurate, easy to load for with much more pleasant to shoot than 300 WM. Especially from lighter weight rifles. It won't quite match 300 WM speeds, but easily beat 30-06. I felt that the trade off of slightly less bullet velocity for less recoil was a good one. I don't see why 7mmWSM wouldn't be the same.

The A-Bolt does have a unique magazine configuration that always puzzled me why it was never more popular. It loads "conventionally" but also permits carrying a spare, relatively quick reload. This feature should probably never be a reason to choose one rifle over another for its own sake but it is an interesting and useful magazine form.

Last time out I used the quick switch magazines. Fired 5 shots total. Just switching mags is alot easier than trying to shove rounds in the top, tho I could probably have gotten away with single loading.

Having spare mags in your pocket make alot less noise, and/or are faster to load than other options

last abolt my dad had before the 7wsm stalker was a medallion grade v octagon slick looking gun with he still had it only one around here.
.....that right there, in 7mm remington magnum is pretty close to a holy grail gun for me. I can find regular Medallions pretty regularly, but not the octagon barreled guns.

I'm 95% sure the 270 is going to end up belonging to my fiancee (soon to be wife. Wedding is in October) depending on how it fits her & how she deals with the recoil.

This is my 3rd attempt at bringing a 270 into the family. First was a very nice Zastava M70 that I loved but had to sell when money was tight a few years back, 2nd was a Winchester M70 Supergrade Maple. Beautiful rifle but just didn't fit either one of us.

I KNOW the monte carlo-ish Browning Medallion stocks fit me. If she falls in love with it though, guess these X-Bolts will end up being a "his & hers" affair.
