The humble SKS rifle might deserve a second look with the threat of assault weapons bans ever looming. These rifles feed from a 10 round fixed magazine which has been acceptable in most proposed bans for years. Look, it’s a worst case scenario idea but IF a ban does get passed (I hope it never does) the old SKS might be worth dusting off and pushing into service for the purposes of defending freedom.

They can be topped off fairly quickly using a 10 round stripper clip:

And they use the common and widely available .30 caliber Russian Short:

With the recent mass shootings and the powers that be in charge, we are closer to a ban than ever before. The SKS might be a decent bet.

Also seems strange that the number of shootings always seems to go up whenever our benevolent overlords try to restrict a certain right. Makes me go hmmm.

I bought my sks years ago for $99. Adding tech sights makes it useful to these older eyes.

I really regret selling my Yugo SKS years ago, but life happened.

I figured I'd just get another cheap SKS someday

I think both the M1 carbine and the SKS is on the list from the wicked witch of the west, but I hope I'm wrong. I read down the list posted with the bill, and I think I remember seeing them. The one that burns me is any pistol or revolver over 50 oz. will be ban. That was my go to, thinking anything that feeds under 10 rounds, would be ok, as my Desert Eagle 44, and my BFR revolvers.

I’ve always been a big fan of the SKS. It is a rifle that just feels good in the hands. It is fairly easy to manipulate, [used to be] cheap ammo, easy to use sights, enough punch for a general purpose/truck gun.

I bought my first SKS from my dad who sold it to me for what he paid, $40.

I think the SKS is a fine defensive, ranch style firearm. It has a lot going for it and was overshadowed quite quickly by the AK, which is a fine design as well. But I tend to gravitate towards the SKS.

I fear the below, when topics such as this come up on this forum...

The enemy has won, they have found a populace that has been entrenched in decadence for the past two generations; soft in their resolve, lacking backbone in their defense of the founding documents. All that is left for the populace is to walk down and turn in their possessions. Such a sad day to see such talk, especially given the audience it's being presented to.

When our Amendments mean nothing, the "Great Experiment" is over. I hope there is enough resolve in this country to protect our Amendments especially our 1A and 2A, more specifically due to the forum here the 2A.

If the time comes when we are literally defending freedom with guns, I doubt a ban will matter much. We'll be using whatever hardware we want.

If a ban actually passed, I am not going to comply anyway...

I bought and sold a bunch of SKS's and AK's over the years. Maybe I should have kept one or two. Oh well.

Hard times make strong men, hard men make good times, good times make weak men, weak men make hard times......

Where do you think we are now?

What we are experience I don't consider "hard times." What we are experiencing is apathy towards doing what is hard, which is a root cause of downward spiral of civilizations.

So I guess to answer your question, “weak men, headed for hard times.”

If people won't defend freedom with their AR15's then what makes you think they'll suddenly have a change of heart and defend it with an inferior SKS? Laws will be passed banning one type of firearm after another until Americans find themselves on Lexington Green again with muskets in their hands wondering how they let it get that far.

Some bunch of drool bucket communist politicians can ' ban ' anything they want, fireplaces, shopping without a mask, semiautomatic rifles, driving gasoline powered cars, it all comes down to what your line in the sand actually is.
You can cower and comply, or do what you must to be an American citizen.
The time to decide is very rapidly approaching

I wish you, my American friends, the very best of luck. I would prefer a pump shotgun to the SKS, but that is just personal preference. The SKS is a good choice if not banned. Over here, it's already too late for many gun related topics. Don't let it go without a (legal, democratic) fight.

"Until Americans find themselves on Lexington Green again with cell phones in their hands wondering how they can get more likes and clicks.

There, fixed it for ya. :scrutiny:

Nobody is going to be using an SKS, AR, or a musket to defend the useless husk of the Constitution, or our "rights." There is only power and the will to use it. The Antis have it, we dont. Whatever table scraps they leave us will be snatched away in a few years, and the populace will just take it like they always do.

Not enough people care about anything except getting their free government handouts so they can get new toys and drugs. The franchise has finally realized that they can simply elect to be supported by the Republic, thus it falls. Frankly, Im surprised it took this long, but here we are.

Ive had a couple of SKS's in the past. The AK's replaced them like the M16 family replaced the M1's/M14's and for the same reasons. I no longer have the SKS's, I do still have an AK.

If you leave the SKS's alone, and don't try to make them an AK, you will be a lot better off. The original 10 round mag is the way to go. Learn to use the strippers, and you can load them reasonably quickly. Just don't expect to always get 10 rounds into the gun, especially if your loading from pouches with used strippers. On average, I usually only ever got 8 or 9 into the gun by the time I got the stripper in it, and either left a round or two in the pouches, and/or lost them on the way to the gun. Never had that issue with the surplus 7.62x39 I had that came loaded on strippers. At least while there were "new".

Skip, or at least vet the aftermarket hicaps. Personally, Id skip them.

The Chinese guns (SKS D or M, cant remember which) that will take an AK mag seemed to work OK. My buddy had one and I don't remember ever having a problem with it function-wise. The aftermarket mags with the tails, seem to be hit or miss.

I know a lot of people bitch about the stocks LOP on them, but its really not bad. I prefer short LOP stocks, so for me, it was fine. They are probably about 0.5" - 1" shorter than most of the other military guns though, including the AK's.

Shooting wise, the guns Ive shot, shot well. They arent target rifles, but they will shoot.
