Being a relative amateur in terms of shooting sports, my first forray into the world of rifles was a Yugo M59/66 SKS. The price, functionality, and military surplus status were all attractive qualities to me. As my first rifle, I give it special credence; it is my favorite rifle- I own others, but it is my favorite. After using some other examples, namely my Rem 700, I became painfully aware of the shortcomings of my SKS and set out to improve upon them.
First, I practiced. This is an example of the groups I was getting on my first ever range trip shooting at 100 yards. 20 rounds, 17 on target with surplus ammunition. As you can see, about 11 inch group with 17 hits- I was happy and deflated at the same time.
All shots taken off of a plastic tripod (range supplied) , gun shouldered.
Then, upon reading about Kivaari Trigger Jobs on numerous websites, I sent my trigger to him. While I had the rifle disassembled, I also made my first attempt at bedding a rifle. I could move the action in the stock; now is tight as a whistle. It feels much less sloppy. For anyone interested, here is the more detailed thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=450811 . This next target is from this morning. 10 rounds fired, 10 on target. Ammunition was Remington UMC. I also had the bayonet removed. About 6 inch grouping for 10 rounds. I was pretty pleased with these results.
My next plan, and most likely the culmination of this project, is the add an Advance Tech rear peep sight. The sights that come on the SKS, atleast my Yugo, are pretty rough. Ideally, after adding a rear peep, I would like to be achieving sub 5 MOA at 100 yard and I think those results are completely attainable.
In summary, if you have an SKS, do yourself a favor and get a Kivaari Trigger Job. The guy has tuned over 2,500 SKS triggers and had mine returned to me in 8 days. I compared my trigger to my Dad's Russian SKS. His has atleast 1/4 inch of creep- mine breaks like glass.
The SKS has alot of potential that can be realized with a little bit of time and effort. Happy shooting!
