I would have to get extremely hungry to part with my 624. I read Elmer Keith and Skitter Skeleton, when I was a kid. I would have done anything to have one, back when they come out. I was too young to buy a handgun and no money either. I found this one 5-6 years ago, new in the box, with all the papers and the cleaning kit. Jumped on it like a chicken on a June bug. I had John Culina make a set of black and white ebony, coke bottle grips for it. In a three person cross draw holster, it caries like it’s not even there. It is one of my favorite woods carrying revolvers. It and a 4 1/4” Freedom Arms model 97 .44 Special. It’s just one of those revolvers, one takes great pride in owning. It is a true classic.

I searched for a 4” version for months and was finally forced to “settle” for a 6.5” to scratch the 624 itch. It happens to be a no dash, ca. 1985 and is pictured with its much larger brother (460V).

Right now, there are quite a few for sale on gunbroker. Of course most have a hefty starting bid or asking price. Usually there are not many on gunbroker and never any 4”.

That slim barrel profile on 24/624, 27 and 25, makes them IMO the most balanced and beautiful DA revolvers. Take a look at 25 with 6.5" barrel https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/model-25 , just 42.5 oz.

Also, I would like to see 6.5" slim barrel on 29/629, and especially 57/657.

Here is the original of that revolver, the S&W Model 1950, 45 ACP, Target Revolver.

This was the first Target Model S&W put into production in 45 ACP. Prior to this Model if a shooter wanted an ACP target revolver it was a custom built revolver either from S&W or a gunsmith.

It would have made the ideal revolver for LE if produced in with a 4” barrel but only a very few were made. When I wanted one, I had to build my own. S&W eventually got around to offering it in stainless as the 45 ACP Mountain Gun. Here is an image of my Foothill Revolver and the Mountain Gun.

They are both round buts, I made a pair of RB/SB stocks for them to see which I preferred.

S&W revolvers should have full under lugs...
On this, we will disagree. Maybe, with hard recoiling cartridges but not on a carry piece, too much extra, unnecessary weight....
The weight is the reason why I will sell S&W 686-3. I wish 686 has the same barrel profile as 66. I was even considering getting one 66, 6", but after finding problems with rear end of the barrel (cracks), decided to go with get Security Six. Friend tried to convince me to go with M14, but I wanted strong, reliable, stainless 357 Magnum, with reasonable weight, and in that respect, there is nothing better than Security Six.
