Does your home defense gun have a silencer?

No, for many reasons, not the least of which is staying out of a government database.

Yep, this is my main reason as well.

I've heard the argument in favor of a silenced home defense weapon before and while I understand the logic, to me, it's not that important. In an awful situation like a home invasion, being quiet(er) is the least of my concerns.

If the government would quit being stupid. I would definitely use one.
One of my friends ran a couple. It was awesome not dealing with muzzle blast.

I hate to tell you, but if youre here, or bought a gun, or ammo, etc, youre on a list somewhere. ;)

And yes, I have a couple of guns I keep handy in the house that are suppressed, and its not for the neighbor's benefit. They are far enough away, they probably won't hear an unsuppressed gun fired inside, not that they would care if they did hear it, as we hear gunfire all the time around here.

I like to be considerate of my neighbors so I use a silencer.

That is one of the reasons I use them for recreational shooting, but not for home defense.

The home defense weapons wear suppressors so that If I'm ever forced to use them in that role, I'm still able to hear and see in the dark after firing.

Unsuppressed handguns in confined spaces are bad enough; touch off a short barreled 5.56 in a bedroom or hallway, you'll have hearing impairment for life.

Exactly.

While NFA stuff is a hassle with an unconstitutional tax and irritatingly long delay, "staying off lists" isn't a valid reason to deprive yourself of the worthwhile ones. In point of fact, the NFA registry is probably one of the least accurate and most unsearchable databases the government has, to the point that if you lose a tax stamp that was pre-eforms, you're not likely to be able to get a replacement.

Not at the moment. I haven't ruled it out for the future, though. I suspect I'd enjoy a suppressed .45 for HD quite a lot. Enough, in fact, that I could be counted on to practice with it often. :D

No. NFA items are always secured in a safe. My HD guns are reliable and easily replaced in the unlikely events of theft or being taken as evidence. A friend of mine's pistol has been held in evidence for over 2 years after an incident where he wasn't even charged, for example.

I do not have one on the HD gear. Part of my HD strategy with my 870 involves everyone in the room laying on the floor holding their ears after the first shot.

Might be nice if the neighbors hear the shots so they can call the law to save you. I keep a pair of electronic muffs on the bed post. That assumes I have time to get them.

This brings up the issue of whether this is a bedside gun or the ever popular carry around the house issue. Carrying a full sized semi with a suppressor would be a pain.

I don't have a dedicated "home defense gun." But if the unthinkable happens, there will be plenty to choose from. To answer the original question, I don't own any silencers. Overrated, IMO. I had one once, for a MAC11.

BTW, if someone breaks through the doors or windows, the rather loud and blaring alarm will wake up the neighborhood. Don't have that? Shame on you. So not bothering the neighbors is just an attempt to be funny. The reason should be your own hearing and then the practical utility, deployment, storage, etc.

It would be, and not practical. I do wear a gun all day, home or not. I have a Glock 17 with a light and suppressor mounted that I often take with me at night when Im out with the dogs. Its a "critter" gun in more than one way. :)

I also have a 10" AR with a suppressor mounted close by (its next to me now as I type), and its by the bed at night.

During the day though, reality is, the one Im wearing is most likely the gun that would get used, unless I saw something coming, and had time to grab something else. If you dont have it on you, no matter how close you think it may be, you dont have it. ;)

That's the truth. I advocate this idea that I heard in a class from the LEO teaching it. Get some buddies with those cheap airsoft pellet guns you can get in the toy store. Put yours in your self-defense location. Sit or stand in various places in the home. Have the 'enemy' come through the doors (whatever you have). See if you can get to the gun in time.
