Talked with my brother in law earlier today. He has 3 dogs. His 5 month old pit bull mix was shot by a dimwited neighbor with a 40 s & w. The bullet entered it's jaw and exicited in the back of his neck. That was 3 days ago. Police called, but the puppy got out and was in the neighbors yard and the neighbor said the puppy attacked him. No charges were filed.

The good news is the dog is FINE. He's eating, barking, playing just like puppies do.

The bad news is I've never heard of a puppy attacking anything except a playtoy. I could be wrong. The puppy weighs about 35lbs. I don't know the shooter, but it sounds to me like he's a real piece of work.

I wasn't there and I know there are always 2 sides to every story. I'm just happy that his puppy is doing fine.

Seriously doubt a 5 month old pit bull puppy (or any pup) would "attack" anyone. Unfortunately, if the puppy was running toward the neighbor, or jumped up onto the neighbor in excitement wanting to play or get attention and the neighbor THOUGHT/misread the dogs behavior as attacking and shot it he is (from a legal standpoint, maybe depending on location though) justified.

Glad to hear the pup is going to be alright. Fix the fence so pup can't dig under/jump over. And tell brother in law not to let dog outside without supervision anymore. Crate training is safer for everyone, easy to do, and if done correctly is less likely to result in the dog picking up any bad behaviors like compulsive digging, barking constantly, eating own feces, etc.

The puppy probably ran up to him, wagging its tail.

The BS surrounding pit bulls can get the dogs hurt and killed. It's sad. They're just dogs.

Every once in a while, I take the bus home from work. I hear conversations. Let me tell you, America is filled with a whole lot of idiots. Some have guns.

That said, it's best to let your neighbors get to know your dogs. Our mail carrier isn't afraid of our dogs.

Puppy pays price for irresponsible owner and hair-trigger neighbor.

agreeed!

don't want your dogs shot by neighbors. Keep the damn things penned up! Just cause you moved out to the country doesn't mean you can free range your mutts.

This is a simple case of cause and effect. But as we all know EVERYTHING is always someone elses fault

Sounds like krochus is one of the trigger-happy and dim-witted.

I'm sure it's not true, but man, that's what you sound like, here, krochus.

Where I live, it's not considered OK to hate your neighbors enough to shoot their dogs for the hell of it. Not in the city, not in the country.

Is that how it is in Arkansas?

Glad the dog is ok. A lot of folks are scared to death of pits. If they are playing with you they think they are attacking. I have owned them for years and come across these yahoo's all the time.

I have been the neighbor before, only mine was with two adult pit bulls that had a mile long history of aggression, killing other neighborhood pets, and coming after people.

This may come as a shock to you but all free ranging dogs aren't all cute puppies with a lick and tail wag in mind. They can be a real problem for public safety and livestock.

I'm sick and tired of folks who move out of the suburbs thinking the can let a 1/2 dozen dogs run free. Trust me round here if YOU won't control your dogs someone else will.

That's a far different story from shooting a puppy.

And what you felt you had to do would have been the same regardless of breed, no doubt.

Remember, none of us were there

during this incident. So, saying this probably happened or that probably happened or the the dog probably did not attack.....all that is unknown to us and we should be reasonable and realize there are two sides to the story. One big part of the bottom line sounds like there is no doubt the dog was on someone's property where he was not supposed to be. I grew up on a farm....if our fence was not good enough to keep the livestock in and a car hit a sow or calf that was our fault, not the car driver. (Iowa does not have range law like out west.) So, kind of the same idea. If your animal is not where it is supposed to be it is probably, in a legal sense, your fault.

Calling the neighbor a jerk is probably not taking The High Road in my opinion.

No ****.

And it may come as a shock to you that not all puppies that get out of the neighbors yard need to be shot in the head immediately.

Like I said, is that how you do it in Arkansas? Shoot the neighbors' puppies for the hell of it?

That's what you sound like.

Or did you not even read the OP?

A lot of assumptions and one sided stories here.

Simple rule with dogs, keep them in your own yard.

If they get out of your yard, bad things could happen.

There's a difference between what is a legal requirement and what is neighborly.

Had your sow gotten out, and the neighbor made a sport of trying to run it down with a pickup truck before you could round it up, would he be "a jerk"?

The fact that people seem to think that any time they can get away with shooting, they should, is a problem.

Seems like an East/West difference.

I suppose that's why I don't venture east of the Mississippi too often. That, and the humidity and biting insects.

Dog threads always devolve into shouting matches between those who have an unnatural fear of the animals versus those who think dogs are incapable of harming anyone. They never end well, so we'll just put this one to bed.
