Sentry Gun Safe

Sentrys are kinda the cheeper safes out there...... That said, mine is a Sentry.

I looked at the Winchester online for several months, for about $800, IIRC. I probably would have gone that route, but I could never find one in stock. I ended up buying the largest safe I could find at Academy, which is a good sized safe, for about a K buck. They have a slightly smaller one for $100 less, but I knew I'd eventually be kicking myself if I didn't get the larger one. It's made by Cannon, and the quality is okay, probably on par with the Winchester.

It fit in the back of my Expedition, though it took four or five guys from the store to load it. Using a little creativity, me and my 14 year old son unloaded it and got it into the garage and installed.

One word of advice. If you buy a safe locally, make sure it opens before you leave the store with it. If it won't, have them drag another one out that will. (Don't ask how I came to have this particular gem of advice to offer.)

Golf balls....lots of 'em. Put 'em under the safe, and you can put that puppy anywhere ya want. Try it before you laugh - I moved my 1800 lb Ft. Knox in that way.

good to keep the guns away from the kids, that's it.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Please don't use golf balls. Use wood dowels rods to roll the safe but only if on a hard surface. If you need more tips send a PM. I used to move safes until I got older and a little smarter.

Try them dowels on carpet....and while they will work, the dowels force straight-line travel, making it difficult to turn corners, etc. I'd like to know what your problems with the golf balls are.....

I think the purchase you are about to make is actually an "RSC", not a safe by ANY measure. You can search youtube and find video of people with no experience at all breaking into them in like 2 minutes flat. They will protect you from honest people and kids, and that's about it. Just be sure you understand that you arent going to get an actual safe for less than a few thousand bucks! Oh and I am a professional mover, golf balls will work, but I recommend just shelling out the 10-15 bucks and rent an actual appliance dolly with kick back wheels and a ratchet strap, it makes it a one man job, 2 if you want to go up stairs. You can also rent one with an electric motor that climbs the stairs making even that a one man job.

Dowels are much easier to use. When moving the safe, move dowels from front to back until safe is in position. Golf balls work. But dowels are easier to control and keep track of.

I am a professional mover, golf balls will work, but I recommend just shelling out the 10-15 bucks and rent an actual appliance dolly with kick back wheels and a ratchet strap, it makes it a one man job, 2 if you want to go up stairs. You can also rent one with an electric motor that climbs the stairs making even that a one man job.

Dowels will work too, but refer to the above quote, then understand that dowels, broom handles, pipes, and less so golf balls, will stretch your carpet and cost a ton of money to fix it. Also, with many hardwood floors, golf balls can cause damage if you don't use enough to properly distribute the weight. Just rent the dolly and save yourself the headache and hours of your time, this will also make your wife think you know what you are doing and you will look like superman to her

I'm not going to disagree, but it could be argued that an inferior one will only provide you with a false sense of security and misplaced confidence. And an RSC is not at all the same as a safe.

Sounds like one of the bolts in the lever/bar mechanism for the locking bars came out. Try taking the back off the door. It may be salvageable with the replacement of a small nut and bolt. The lock may also have broken. I bought a used one for $50, installed, a few years ago.

Dicks Sporting goods sells some really nice gun safes, every quarter they try to get rid of them by knocking 40-50 percent off for one week. Trust me, I work there and we are having a sale soon where I intend to buy one with my discount!

two days ago i just finished my quest for a gun safe, best bang for the buck in my area turned out to be a 1000 dollar cabela's brand 12-24 gun safe. it's a real slick machine and is easy on the eyes to top it off.
i suggest buying in store though, the same safe costs almost 300 more online then in the store.

Sentry is lower end, and they do not sell parts. If the bolts are attempting to extend further on one side than on another, I'd take a look inside the door. Whatever the cause, it should be obvious. Might be a missing nut, or it could be a broken weld. Either of those would be worth fixing.

I saw a Winchester safe at costco today. 500 bucks. I think they are made in Ft. Worth.

They are made in China.

Try your local locksmith that sells safes - he might have a trade-in for a great price

I think that if you make a frame that's not as high as a golf ball the golf ball method might work pretty slick. You'd need a bunch of them though, so maybe go to a driving range, rent a bucketful and sneak them out. When you're done with the safe take them back.

I don't know. I'd rather just conceal them somewhere. After all, a safe will only pique a criminal's curiosity. (I too am a not-so-proud owner of a Sentry)
