Before I pull the trigger on a 1-4x AR scope is it possible to get a decent co-witness with BUIS with the scope set on 1x? My two concerns are the length of the scope tube could give you a tunnel effect and what heigth of a ring gives a good cowitness with 1-4 type scope? If using BUIS with the scope mounted is not an option I would consider mounting the scope with a quick release mount.

It means the 1-4X25mm scope I have on one of the AR's will not co-witness the sights, front or rear...and the height of the sights are in the center of the scope.

The nature of the optics won't permit you to. Your front sight will basically look like you are staring at it from a couple inches away and it will be large and out of focus. How bad that is depends on how big your objective lens is on your scope, and how close it is to your front sight.

I'm glad I read this thread! I had planned on using a DNZ one piece mount to put a Millet 1x4 designated marksman scope on an AR with BUIS that I'm planning on building this spring! It looks like I need to stop over to the Larue website and check out the QD mounts.
The american defense recon-x mount works well with that scope as well. I've been using that combo for a while now. My friend is using an spr-e and having some issues getting it far enough forward. I think he just has to readjust the diopter, but it's enough to have him complaining a bit.

That is the way to go, the reason it won't work it because of the curvature of the glass...basically because it is a lens rather than a flat piece of glass like a holosight or typical red dot. It is also the reason that an optic gathers more light than the naked eye (with good glass quality, coatings, good grind on the glass).

That's interesting. I've used 1x-4x variables on my AR15s and always wondered why the front sight block was slightly magnified at 1x. I just figured that my scopes didn't have a true 1x.

That is often times the case as well. I am going out on a limb here, but I don't believe a true 1x is in existence. I have seen good scopes that were advertised as being 1x and they too would not allow you to focus on the front sight.
FWIW, there is a Bushnell Trophy 1-4x in the buy, sell, trade: accessories if you're interested. Not mine, so you won't hurt my feelings, but figured I'd mention it.

Night force and Trijicon have true 1X scopes. The Accupoint that I borrowed when aimed at a fence with both eyes open it was a straight line through my field of veiw. At least it was so close to true 1X as far as my rusty eyes could see.
But the scope is focused on the target. So the front sight is still blurry. Need a QD mount for BUIS use.

My Horus Talon is a true x1-4 as well, if I'm not mistaken, but it also won't cowitness back up irons effectively.

That may be, but I just can't see how they would get the grind right to still capture more light and go down to a true 1x (however there are plenty that are about 1.05x or 1.1x). Either way, I have never seen one that allowed a focused view of the front sight.Zerodefect said:
