I saw a mosin 91/30 the other day at a shop for cheap, and so I was reading up on these things to see if I should bother. In reading stuff, I got curious about the 7.62x54r cartridge.

I keep reading that it is essentially the russian .30/06. I am curious about that statement, in a way that completely ignores the most common platform refered to on here - i.e. the Mosin.

So, is this a widely used cartridge for sporting purposes in other parts of the world? Do they make sport and competition rifles chambered for it? Seems like there is brass that is boxer primed (e.g. winchester white box off the top of my head), and it takes a standard .311 bullet like a .30/06.

I am interested in what people know about this cartridge - history, modern use, etc.
 
not quite a .30-06

yes there is boxer primed brass out there, i have some old norma brass that i loaded a few years back for hunting. slug your barrel, mine is .310 and i normally just .308 or .309 projectiles and i can group 2-3 moa consistantly at 100 yard with them being fired from a m1891 with a heavily pitted bore
 
The comparison to the 30-06 is because it has very similar ballistics. It certainly has been popular in a variety of eastern bloc weaponry, from sniper rifles to machine guns. It can be a very accurate cartridge, especially when fired from Finnish weapons.

As far as hunting uses and chambering in sporting rifles, it is not as common internationally as the 30-06 is in the US. This is probably mainly due to the lack of a hunting and shooting culture internationally than anything wrong with the cartridge.

The 30'06 uses .308 diameter bullets.

The 7.62x54R compared favorably to the 30'06 militarily, and in the real world, as a sporting round. The long barrel of the 91/30 allow it to achieve a very respectable velocity with handloads and 180gr bullets and the resulting near 3300 ftlbs of energy. Check out the realguns site.

:banghead: Duh.... Sorry, thanks for the correction. That said, there are a relatively large variety of .311 bullets commercially available, so it seems like handloading would be pretty straight forward.

Thanks for those links, there is a lot of information there, that should keep me busy!
