I dont make big bucks, but am looking at another 1911, I dont spend much time on the autoloaders page, between the new Remington R1 1911 or a STI, which would be the best deal?

STI Spartan has a way better trigger, adjustable sights, beavertail grip safety, commander hammer, etc. The R1 Remington is a GI style 1911 A1 with a Novak style sights, they are similarly priced. I would get both, but I collect 1911s, if I could only one or the other it would be the STI.

The Remington, while well built (from what I've read) is a still a lot of hype. STI's line of 1911's have proven time and again, from their Spartan's to their Perfect 10's, to be a quality piece of equipment. If you're looking for nostalgic quality there are plenty of 1911's out there that fit the bill for a cheaper price. For quality go for the STI and never look back (at least in comparison to the new Remington R1).

not a big fan of either, but if those were my only choices, i would choose STI.

every R1 i've seen has exhibited extremely poor build quality. the remington name means nothing to me. it's quality that counts. :)

i would take the SA mil spec before either of them.

On Saturday I took delivery of my first .45 ACP, an STI Spartan. I don't know anything about the Remington, but I can tell you I am VERY satisfied with my Spartan. It is extremely well built and I have had no failures through the first 100 rounds or so. I can't imagine that you would be disappointed with this firearm.

I have the Spartan in 9mm and I am very satisfied with it in every way. Get extra fiber optic for the front sight they break easily. They are very easy to shoot in 9mm and very accurate.

STI Spartan is a great gun.

My Remington is pretty bad to be honest. My Para GI Expert is nicer than my Remington :(

The 9mm version has been on my "Want List" for some time now. Glad to hear someone else who likes them.

I just picked up a Para GI Expert for $469.99 and I would recommend it over the Remington any day as they seem to be pretty hit or miss as far as build quality goes. I've never spent any time with the STI but I here good things. I have read a few places that the Spartan is the only STI that isn't American made...that it is from the Philippines. Anyone know if that is true or not?

STI Spartans are made in the Phillipines using all STI internals and to a specific STI specification. They are inspected and tweaked as needed by STI before going out the door. The examples I have handled have been very nicely put together and STI is one of the best in the business when it comes to customer service. I would not have any qualms with owning one.

The STI is a well proven pistol---top pick---the Remington is new and unproven---plus Remington quality has sadly been going down big time for the last several years. My two cents...

I would pick the STI over the R1.
I would pick a Rock Island over the R1.
I would pick a SA Mil-Spec over the R1.
I would pick almost any other 1911 over the R1.

I got to play with a R1 just yesterday. I was not impressed.

Another vote for the STI. My experience with STI has been with their higher end guns, the Trojan, 2011 and Trubor. All have been excellent firearms.
