I see that Remington has announced a new product - the 1911 R1. And MSRP is only $699?
This is coming from somebody with no in-depth 1911 knowledge, but I've been considering getting an entry level 1911 for some time.

Does anybody know anything about this product? The MSRP nearly puts it in the same range as RIA 1911s. Are these legit 1911s, or are they bastardized as some of the manufacturers' (Para, STI) 1911s are? Not to say that there's anything wrong with "bastardized" 1911s, but are the parts interchangeable and such? What about quality?

In short, I'm interested in knowing how this stacks up against some of the standard "entry-level" 1911s like the SA GI and Mil-Spec and some of the S&W 1911s.

Unless you just really want a Big Green, I personally own and recommend one of the Rock Island pistols. The base GI model starts ~$400; a Tactical model that's more tricked out than the Remington with ambi thumb safety, beavertail grip safety, Novak-style sights, and a couple other perks is about $50 more.

There is better for less out there.

It wouldn't even be in my top 5 picks for 1911's in that price range.

For the money of the R1 I would spend a little more and get an STI trogan. Not that the R1 isnt good my friend has one and it seams very well made I just think you get more for your money with the STI.
