Now why can't I find a production model that looks like that? I've been looking for a coffin handle bowie made with decent steel, a nice guard, and a "classic" (as opposed to "archaic") blade profile. I can't get seem to get all three.

Cold steel makes their Laredo Bowie in VG-1 San Mai steel with a black Micarta coffin handle, that would seem to fit your specifications.

$599.00 you are kidding. VG-1 (RC 55-56) is cheap production steel, a step down from AUS-8. So you are paying the High dollar for the San Mai III blade, which means they have sandwiched the cheap steel in between two layers of even cheaper steel. Because there is nothing in this knife to justify the cost of $599.00. Help us understand why this would be a superior knife and worth the price.

The knife in the picture is is available for $500.00. I will make it out of CPM 154 for $600.00.

Cold Steel's catalog price is much higher than what is available from other sources. A quick Google search turned up the same San Mai Laredo Bowie for $373.00, for example. Other versions of the same knife in SK-5 are available for around $150.00. I'm not knocking your own handsome knife, just answering Unistat's question of why a similar knife isn't available from a production (factory) source. Answer: it is. Unistat's question was probably motivated by budgetary considerations.

None of the prices you have quoted for the CS knives you talk about are worth anywhere near the money they ask for them - not even at the reduced prices. I've owned a lot of so called CS high end knives, so I know from experience. I thought everyone knew that CS prices were a joke. And, that SK-5 knife for $150 is also a joke. BTW, what steel is SK-5? Do you know? I had a Magnum Tanto IX that I was happy as heck to get rid of.

If I want a real survival production Knife, I'll buy an ESEE (RAT [not Ontario]) knife for that same $150.

Sometime soon, after Christmas, I'll buy a knife from Jim.

SK5 is equivalent to 1080. I love the RAT Cutlery Rat series. The rat 3 is my favorite of the series. But I can get a Spyderco Bill Moran in VG 10 for $70.00 which is heads and shoulders above the Rat 3. I held the knife once two years ago and I hold 1,000s of knives a year and for one to stay in my mind.

very good looking Bowie :) simple, yet classy. i like it.

as for the CS Bowies, i actually like them, think they handle great and perform well, i just can't get past the origin of them, though :( Bowies are such a huge part of U.S. history, to buy one made elsewhere just seems wrong to me.
