I'm seriously considering moving out of state. Florida is #1 on the short list followed by possibly NC...

My question is regarding the transfer/transport of my guns, as well as my CCW permit.

What do I have to do to transfer my weapons? Is my CT permit void and must I go through the whole process of obtaining a new state permit all over again? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You may pack up your guns and go. Few states require prior registration or licensing to possess guns you already own. And FL has very good gun laws, in general: FL LAWS.

"Transfer" is actually the wrong word anyway, as they are not changing ownership. As for transport, unload them, store them in your trunk or other inaccessible place in the vehicle (if a van or such without a trunk, put them in locked cases), and drive to your destination with the fewest possible stops. That will keep you in compliance with the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, "Safe Passage" provisions. That will keep you safer in "bad" states like NY, NJ, MD (not really so bad), or even DC (but don't go there).

As for your carry permit, FL does not recognize a CT permit, so you're out of luck until you get your FL one. Here are FL's CCW permit process and laws: FL CARRY INFO FROM HANDGUNLAW.US.

I would like you to consider Virginia as well. We have no registration so just bring your guns and no problems. For a concealed permit check out the Virginia State Police web site for all the info and laws pertaining to the permit. You can also get the application form from them. Also we are an open carry state so if it takes a while to get the permit you can still carry it on you as long as it isn't hidden from common observation.

Just to clarify - FL does not recognize CT CCW because CT would not recognize FL. FL is very easy to get a CCW, but it is taking about the full 90 days allowed them to process the huge amount of applications

I would cheerfully live any where in the South.

Same here! Probably because we're still relatively free down here.
And sweet tea? You'll develop a taste for it. :D

Good advice, but I'd go out of my way to avoid NJ. Just drive through NY and PA.

Oregon probably has better gun laws than anywhere in the South, however it has stupid CCW reciprocity laws. The problem is that ORegon does not recognize any other states permit. Also, I am told there may be a 6 month residency waiting period to get permit, although I am not sure about that. However, the crime is generally lower out here and once you are a resident it is very easy to get a permit. All you do is take a 1 hour gun safety class and you're in.

Unlike most places in the South, in Oregon, if you have a CCW, you can carry your gun (loaded) into banks, bars, schools; just about anywhere except federal government buildings.

Open carry is legal for the most part anywhere in the state; Portland is bit sketchy. Also, you can own all the NFA weapons you want and there is no requirements for sheriff approval, like in some so-called free states, like Tennessee.

I am planning on moving to WA and I am really going to miss some of the freedoms I had here in Oregon. In WA you cannot own NFA weapons, except for suppressors, which you are not allowed to shoot. However, WA will issue CCW permits to anyone who passes the NICS. It is real easy, all you do is go to the sheriff and get fingerprinted. WA is a shall issue state to non-residents, so it would be easy as cake.

As far as North Carolina, they call it the Massachusetts of the South. Oregon has very beautiful mountains (better than NC IMO) and a lot better gun laws. However, North Carolina does have its own charm and a more interesting culture than Oregon, probably. Oregon probably beats anywhere in the SOuth for shooting spots. It seems in the South that you have to know people in order to find places to shoot. They have a few gun clubs, but most are expensive and have restrictive membership policies. I was disappointed to see in a place like Greenville, SC there is only one reasonable rifle club that requires a few hoops to jump through and isn't cheap. In Oregon and Washington there are shooting clubs everywhere and they are half the price of many clubs back east.

Thanks for all the insight so far guys!

Too clarify, we are thinking about moving to a state with the following criteria:

1) WARM weather (warmer than CT anyway)

2) Lower taxes/standard of living (property etc.)

3) Gun friendly

I love to be outside; riding my Harley, shooting my guns, etc. Here in CT, that's limited to about 6 months out of the year. I get stir crazy. For almost half the year I'm stuck indoors, unable to ride, and if I want to shoot I have to chalk up $25-$30/hour to go to an indoor range.

I want riding weather, outdoor ranges, and less than the $6000+ a year I pay in property taxes alone. Hell you can't even find a decent 3 bedroom house up here for under $250-300K!

I currently hold a $230K mortgage and my house was appraised last summer at a conservative $415K... If I can lock down a good job and walk away with close to $200K on my sale, I'm gone...

A warning about Florida..... Hurricanes. We got em.
Otherwise it Heaven.
Hint. get a Florida non-res CCW before you move here. Then when you arrive all you have to do is change the address.

Wow! A non-res permit?! I seriously need to look into that! I plan on traveling to FL quite a bit to look at property as well as vacation so that'd be ideal regardless. Looks like I have some homework to do. Thanks for the hint! :D

As far as hurricanes go, I'll take em! Here we get blizzards, frigid winters that last half the year, and the short summers we do get are usually humid as all hell. Oh and we get hurricanes and tornados too, as evidenced by the damage I incurred by a 100ft tree falling on my house last year... :cuss:

Sounds like FL for you - avoid the big cities unless you need to find work - crime and traffic are nasty in Jax, Orlando, Miami, Tampa areas

Daytona and then Bike Week are coming up real soon

Thanks for the heads up. I'm currently looking into the Port St. Lucie area (have friends there that've been there for 15 years) and around Daytona. Also have a friend in Sarasota.

When I mention the possible move, people here in CT talk like FL is a post apocalyptic wasteland. "Oh the economy is sooo bad down there" and "there are no jobs" etc. I tell them, sounds just like CT but with fewer taxes and better weather! Seriously, how bad can it be??? I already crunched some numbers, and if I can sell my house and walk away with the $$$ I have in mind, I only need to make 2/3 of my current income to be ok... The equity from my house will allow me to keep my mortgage around HALF of where it is now AND have a large cushion in the bank... Right now the 2 obstacles are selling my house here and finding a good job there...

Sounds like the original questions have been answered. Climate, job search, economics, etc. are outside of our scope here at THR, but feel free to continue those discussions via Private Message if you wish.

Good luck in your move!
