So I've been laying down orders on quite a few milsurps lately, and I've checked out (what I've thought) to be every gun-selling site in existence.

Now, I'd happened across the SOG website on numerous occasions and never saw any firearms, until I finally realized that I had to have an FFL on file with them to be able to see anything noteworthy! I only came upon this realization when looking at their site again, after reading a post several years old about how their wholesale prices are dramatically cheaper than anything posted on AIM Surplus, J&G, or elsewhere. (The difference in question was AIM's VZ-24 retailing for $230, while SOG was purportedly selling them at $160 a pop)

This post was three years old, so, can someone fill me in on whether this is still the case? I'm too young to be registered with an FFL or C&R, so I'm kind of dismayed that I may be missing out on great deals here. I guess I'll have to set up a meeting with my local FFL dealer to get him to check around on there for me.
 
It's been several years, but I had no problem with my orders from SOG. I think I bought bayonets and ammunition from them.
 
I have a C&R and SOG doesn't seem to have any better deals than other popular sites. I've bought most of my milsurp bolt rifles from Century Arms.

I have heard a lot of bad comments on SOG's offerings and customer service.

Maybe it is just me, but they have been pretty good. The RC K98 I got from them was a bit of a dissapointment, but still not too bad. It is mechanically in good shape, just a little more pitting that I would have expected from their description. Everything else has been good.
 
I was told that I'd be getting a NEW PSL, and instead they sent me what I believed was a used Tennessee Guns FPK. That's as much as I care to elaborate.
 
To answer the OP's post:

Yes, it's still the the case, pricewise - but...

AIM comes with a bayonet/scabbard and is 8mm in "very good+ to excellent condition" and "bores will not be bright and shiny but will have deep lands and grooves."

SOG is 7mm Mauser and no bayonet, in "good overall condition." No mention of bore condition.

Various reports of SOG I've read (no personal experience) run from no issues to disappointment over condition.

For the extra bit of money, personally, I'd hit up the AIM deal.

Allow me to retort then ;) From SOG, I have purchased: a M57 tokarev, a TT-33 tokarev, a PA-63, a Makarov, and two P-83's. All have been in great condition. The pa-63, makarov, and p-83's were in like new, unfired condition. Hell, the pa-63 didn't even have a spec of cosmoline on it.

Every order I have made at SOG was shipped immediately, they have better prices than anyone on most of the milsurp stuff, and they don't do the bullcrap thing that most others do of making you pay extra for the 2nd mag that was actually included with the gun as they received it.

After positive experiences time and time again, I'd have no fear in ordering from them. In fact, when I ordered the pa-63, I asked for a handpick, and the woman on the phone told me that they're all in such good condition that I'd just be wasting my money on a handpick.

So...you're in the "no issues" category of my post then.

That's cool, glad you've had great experience with them - more often than not on forums you hear more bad than good experiences. Always nice to hear when someone has a great experience (or multiple) from a store. I think the nature of milsurps and C&R is the luck of the draw (which I actually find very fun). Sometimes you're a big winner, sometimes not so much.
 
I had a M 48 BO returned to SOG . No more dealing with this outfit as far im concerned. Im glad they paid for the shipping back.
 
I do NOT care for SOG and will not do biz with them again.

I had a bad experience and then they didn't honor their promise to re-imburse shipping. Their "contact us via email" comment box is permanently down. Their reps were rude to me too. No thanks.

Their prices are no better, and often the same or worse than others. Sure, their guns may be a few dollars less, but come with less extras like mags, bayonets, holsters, etc.

And yes, the CZ Mausers are different caliber and condition.
 
Back when SOG posted their prices they were comparable to AIM. I paid for a hand picked CZ 52 from SOG. When it arrived, the firing pin was broken. I have purchased much more from AIM and still do . Never had any problems.
 
I picked up a Mosin 91/30 from SOG last year for $77 IIRC and I was very pleased with the speed of shipping, the price and the quality of the rifle. I know its only one gun so maybe I got lucky but since they are local to me (of course so is AIM) I could always drive over there and complain if I wasn't happy.

Isn't that a universal truth? When someone has a problem they seek information. They find forums and other means by which to complain or seek answers. The satisfied customers have no need for this and are often silent.
 
I've ordered three guns from them and ammunition at different times, I have always got what I ordered on time and in great shape.
 
I purchased several guns from SOG...... I did return one that did not work properly and there no questions asked..... nothing from outward appearances would have been obvious that the gun had problems so I can not fault SOG...great customer service.....

All other guns were as advertised and at better prices than elsewhere... I will buy from them again.
 
glad this came up because I placed my first order with them this week. I found their communications terse and unfriendly and the 2 girls I spoke with were the same. They tack on shipping after the order is placed and without telling you- which I found irritating but as this was my first bulk ammo order is perhaps the norm. What REALLY pissed me off was the fine print under their "terms and conditions" (which is in no way mentioned at any time during the sale) that there is a percentage fee added on for credit card sales. I thought this was against the "rules" merchants have to follow for cards. In any case it was a ****** move and allows them to advertise slightly lower prices when in reality you might be paying more after all is said and done. Just seems a little dishonest to me because I have to believe that 99% of folks are going to pay with a credit card.

I was frankly surprised to read that several of the posts didn't like SOG. I've had a C&R for a decade now and have bought from many different Company's. SOG and AIM are two of the best. In my experience both of these Companies advertise accurately, and have good customer service. I guess everyone will have to make up their own mind.

I agree with this. I don't think that forums give an accurate refection of how a company is doing.

Yep. Whether it's ethical or not, I don't know - I do find it misleading in a way. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that credit card company agreements mean that a vendor can't specifically pass on fees to a customer just for using their credit card, but i guess that depends on the specific agreement a vendor has.

That'd be like going into a drug store for a $5 box of band aids. Oh, you want to use a credit or debit card for that? $5.15 then.

That would be weird. And I would drive down the street to another drug store.
