hey im new here, have a few questions for anyone that knows california gun laws. i grew up in minnesota, currently a temp resident of wyoming and moving to sacramento for 3 months of schooling. Just wondering on recommendations of what to make comply and what to send home. i don't know where i will be working at when done with school, but just looking at the short term for now. i am 19 and moving in march. i currently have 1 mosin m91, 1 mosin m44,1 remington 870 20ga, 1 ruger 10/22, 1 wasr-10, and 1 taurus 627 .357 magnum. the m91 has a nikon prostaff, the ruger has big magazines, and the wasr-10 is as they come except a Mac90 stock which i know must be removed along with a magazine lock installed and only 10rd magazine used. the 627 i got with a permit to purchase and my father. Also wondering is it legal to have items such as the Mac90 stock and 30rd magazines?(but not install or use) ive done some reading but just keep getting confused. thanks

they will know a lot more, sorry but, actually NOT SORRY
left the the left coast, never can return.

Actually, NO
the magazine alone will make you a felon

no im going to wyotech for automotive right now in laramie and taking a light duty diesel class in sacramento

How much time will you really have to shoot?

I know, downer question... You might like this place: http://www.sacvalley.org/

You seem to have the answers already; I'd leave the 30-rounders (and all 10+ mags) out of state. You could disassemble them and bring them in as collections of parts, so long as you do not re-assemble them in CA.

If I see the correct Mac90 stock, looks like just a big 'thumb hole'; that's exactly as regulated as a plain pistol grip. So, if you put on a magazine lock and stick to 10-round mags, it's not a California 'assault weapon' in that configuration. (Presuming it meets length requirements - I can't tell if it's 30" or not.) See also the Calguns AW ID flowchart. (.pdf)

Remember that as under-21 you'll have problems buying handgun ammunition, but that's not exclusively a CA problem.

i shoot a fairly good amount(minnesota almost everyday, wyoming least once a week), out there i don't know how much i will. but i do prefer to have what i can with me. the wasr-10 is my firearm of choice. so disassembled 30 rds are ok? and the Mac90 stock is ok if i reach past 30 inches? i understood from what i read on other sites that i need the mag lock and 10rd mags regardless. so i was already planning on getting them. what about a fixed collapsible stock plus a pistol grip and the mag lock and 10 rds? i have a collapsible stock that the pivot and spring broke so i just stuck a bolt int there and it will no long collapse. also i read that with handguns under the age of 21 you can only have them within the state for 60days without registering them. dose that apply to me beings that i am not a permanent resident? im not worried about ammo for the 357 because i have a decent amount and would be more a home defense weapon then anything.

I hate to tell someone what I think they "need," but do you really need all those guns for a three-month stay? Why not just bring the revolver for self defense at home (CCW is out, but the law is very generous regarding defense of your residence) and leave the rest in storage? This assumes you aren't residing in the dormitory (if any) of the school, which may prohibit firearms on campus. Otherwise, the advice given by Librarian is spot on.

im not going to be in student housing, they don't even offer it. i see your point, but at this point i have no idea where i will end up after school is out. my girlfriend lives in southern california. my thought process is i may be back in 3 months or it could be 10 years i have no idea. so i would rather have them with me then not see them for a long time since even once i get a job and start making money i won't have time to go home unless it was just a weekend but seems kinda pointless if the trip is just for my firearms. i don't plan on staying in california for a long time but i don't plan on returning to minnesota for a while either.

also i read that with handguns under the age of 21 you can only have them within the state for 60days without registering them.
I have no idea where that came from - no CA law requires that, unless you actually move here for real; 'just visiting' is not included.

If you decide to stay after school, then probably you would need to file the new-resident paper for any handguns you may move here. That's for everyone, not 18, 19, 20; under-21 is not that discriminated against.

Did you look at the flow-chart I linked? Should answer your questions, but if not, come on over to Calguns; lots of help on this stuff there.

i don't remember which site that came from. yes i have the flow chart but that also confused me. thought it would be much easier to just ask if this is ok and see what i get. thanks for your guys help, ill check out Calguns

Why don't you drop your guns off with me? Nevada is right next door to California. I'll babysit your guns for free. They will be placed in a safe with other guns so they won't get lonely. I will even take them out to exercise.;)

Your guns will not be happy in California.

When you get settled in, drop me a line and I'll fill you in on the local ranges and gun stores

If you do settle in the Sacto area, a CCW is pretty easy to get right now...of course tha 627 might be a hair large for that

Since when? Do you have one? Mind posting a photo of it?
Since the latter half of last year, I have 4 clients who have gotten theirs since Dec and personally know of 6 who have theirs already.

Why is is so hard to believe, Sacramento County is now pretty much (you still have to pass a background check) a Shall Issue county

I don't have one, I'm covered under SB218...never needed one

ill keep my firearms thank you very much lol. thanks 9mm, that would be nice. is there ever any gunshows out there? even if im not buying anything it is something i am familiar. i know this move will be a life changing experience. no more small town usa lol. least i've been there and got a idea of what im getting into. if i do stay i won't be 21 till may of 2012 fyi

Locally our big show is at CalExpo, 2 hours to the west is the San Francisco Cow Palace show and 2 hours to the east is the Big Show in Reno.

Funny about the small town comment, Sacramento is the smallest town I've ever lived in.

ok cool ill have to keep those in mind. i grew up in a town of 2500, my high school had 70 kids, graduated 20. private laid back high school. if you brought a gun they would just tell you to not bring it the next day. lol(private so the police couldn't do anything to anyone without the schools permission). nothing at all what you grew up with. heck homecoming we had a day where everyone would drive a tractor to school. Josh Thompson-way out here

Cause I lived there for over forty years. It used to be that the only way to get a CCW was to make a major contribution to the Sheriff's campaign fund. If they have become a shall issue county then great.

Look at the above link. You still have to have a reason to get a CCW in Sacramento. That does not make it a shall issue county. Here in Nevada there are no questions about why you want a CCW. You apply, pass background, and get you card.

It's about as 'shall issue' as California gets.

First item: see the info on Richards v Prieto; Calguns Foundation sued the Sheriffs of Sacramento (McGinness) and Yolo (Prieto) - McGinness, for assorted reasons, decided to moot the case against him and start issuing CCW for the reason "self defense" (new sheriff is continuing the policy). Prieto has decided to continue litigation.

Second item: see the Calguns information thread on Sacramento.

Yes, it's a big change, and if you are used to even 10 years ago, it would look very surprising.

Here are the steps I took to get my CCW in Nevada.

1. Signed up with a CCW instuctor. Paid him his fee and took the course.

2. Took the paperwork to our Sheriff's office. Got fingerprinted and paid their fees.

3. Got my CCW.

A bit different from California wouldn't you say. But then again, California's gun laws have made it one of the safest and most crime-free states.:)

I will admit the process isn't the classic shall issue. But as already has been said, in a May Issue state, this is as close as you're going to get...in other words, while still within the existing state laws, this is as easy as it gets.

My students have described it to me as:
1. Fill out app - reason: self defense...Finger print and background check
2. Get approved
3. Take CCW course and turn in paperwork
4. Receive CCW

The changes to CCWs in Sacramento over the last year are mind blowing Lizziedog1. Hundreds of permits issued with hundreds more in the pipeline. I never would have believed it a year ago. Permits are all being issued for "Self Defense" as Good Cause.

The Billy Jack link you have posted may not be completely up to date.

CalGuns is an awesome force for the restoration of 2nd Amendment Rights in California hand in hand with the CRPA and the NRA. Check out the statewide CCW Initiative. They're doing it, county by county, with the toughest nuts saved for last.
