I really wanna get a nice AR-15 without breaking the bank (I really did like the Hk MR556, but it's wayyyy to expensive)...

any recent reviews / opinions / pictures of the Colt 6920 rifle? Or Any other Colt rifle? (yes, I have used the search button, I'm just hoping information has changed since those older posts have been made)...

thanks!

Jack

Great Rifle. I just got rid of mine however for the 6940, which is even better!

I like the 6940. I bought my first Colt rifle 5 days ago after be a Colt revolver collector for years. I put 200 rounds through the Colt this weekend and it ran flawlessly and was clean when I got it home. When pricing guns I try to keep in perspective the price of ammo. Over the life of the rifle you'll spend 15 times the original cost of the gun on ammunition so what's 200 bucks between friends.

I looked long and hard at the various AR's on the market before selecting my 6920.

I'm of the opinion that for a factory gun I couldn't have done better, but could've done a lot worse given what I paid. Outside of the barrel it's the same as the issued rifle at work. Work issues a shorter barrel, or did, when I worked for Uncle Sugar.

I have a 6920.
I bought it after the election and paid too much (in hindsight). But I'd only trade it for a LMT or Noveske.

I did a lot of research, but the best advice came from here:

http://forums.officer.com/showthread.php?81462-So-you-want-to-buy-an-AR-15-huh

Written by a cop for cops, but it's got a ton of good advice and it's not too technical.
The AR forums assume you've been a Navy SEAL and want to improve your weapon.

He recommended a CMMG, I bought the Colt, but I knew why and I never regretted the purchase.

What are the benefits of a 6940 over the 6920? The ability to hang stuff off of it? It is still a shorty, not a miod-length, right?

I am debating over a 6920 or a BCM mid-length for my next AR. I am leaning towards the mid-length due to reliability and longer site radius, although I will probably mount an optic on either.

Thousands of rounds without a jam. 6920 is by far one of the most fun rifles I've ever owned.

6940 is a monolithic receiver/forend with a free floated barrel. It should be more accurate than the standard M-4 style rifle, even if you hang nothing else on it.

A Colt 6920, or 6940 are the real deal, top quality parts made almost exclusively in house by Colt with proper metallurgy and heat treating. Everything other than barrel length, and the fire control system are basically meeting the actual Mil. Spec which is an easy way for the average guy to determine that the rifle meets a fairly high standard of quality.

The Colt 6920 is a great rifle. Go for it.

I love mine. 100% reliable.
I'm adding a 13" Larue FF rail to it soon.

I've added:
-KAC Ambi safety
-Magpul Moe grip
-Magpul ACS stock
-Magpul BAD lever
-Aimpoint ML3 in a Larue LT129 mount.

The 6940 gets a monolithic upper receiver with a quad-rail forearm and front/rear flip-up iron sights. All good stuff to have, though you pay for it.

If you are relatively new to ARs, a 6920 with a good optic like an Aimpoint is hard to beat IMHO. It's one of those guns that almost nobody on THR will advise against.

Thanks guys, I know that topic has been beat to death, but I feel better asking about it before I drop so much money on it...

I just have a few more questions:

1) Would the 6940 be less accurate since it has flip up sights (versus the 6920?)

2) Today I went by a gun store and the salesman was a big fan of armalite... How does Armalite stack up against Colt?

3) Also, anyone know if there are any new Colts coming out (or other brands for that matter)? (I feel like I'm buying a computer, I know when I put the money down and buy one, something new will be released the next week and I won't have the latest and greatest lol)

thanks again!

@Jack: About the salesman... which gun does the shop carry? The Colt or the Armalite? The AR platform is probably the most widely disputed platform on every gun forum and the consensus is always that Colt is the gold standard. Armalite of today is not the Armalite of yesteryear, Colt is.

Re: #3 - Guns are not computers. This is faulty reasoning on your part. The Colt will retain its value should you have to regrettably sell it in the future. Your three year old computer is practically free now. Also, the AR platform is not *new* by any stretch of the imagination. It's an old design that continues to thrive.

alright thanks, would it be worth it to buy a 6920 or 6940 from a pawn store?

I know there are a lot of variables, but how much would a used Colt go for?

As far as accuracy? I notice no difference in the accuracy between my 6920 and my 6940. The 6940 does seem to have less of a hold over at close range than the 6920. The stock rear flip up sight on the 6940 seems kind of flimsy, but I have not noticed any negative effects on accuracy because of it.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used one from a pawn shop. The 6940 I just bought was used. I got it for $1225.

Every gun will fail at some point. Colt does most things well which allows most to run for quite a while without issue. It should take minimal upkeep to stay running well for many years to come.

I would choose the 6940. You can't go wrong with either of these. I wouldn't buy it used just because I never buy used guns. Get one now because the prices are good. In 2009 the prices were a lot higher.

I would actually go with the 6920. The 6940 has a carbine length monolithic upper. As you shoot more you will probably find that you want a longer grip on the rifle. With the 6940 you are stuck with what you have. In addition you can not switch out the barrel with the 6940. It uses a special barrel extension, barrel nut and tool. The 6920 gives you more options.

You can't go wrong with the 6920. I would buy it new. It's not likely you'll save much buying used, not enough to really matter anyway.

Buy one now while they can be had for around $1k. It wasn't long ago that people were paying that much for Bushmasters, Rock Rivers, and Smith & Wessons.

The post-Obama collapse of the firearms market combined with a crummy economy makes this a great time to buy if you've got the cashola.

if I am just going to put a acog on it and a flash light, the 6920 would be fine right?

I think I like the idea of being able to change up the rails on the 6920, than being stuck with what comes on the 6940...hmmmmm

anyone have any pics of some Colts?

An ACOG and a light would work just fine, but you should evaluate what you really plan to do with the rifle. If self-defense or other "emergency" situations is a potential use, then a quality red dot like an Aimpoint or one of the new EoTech XPS optics would be a good choice. Don't get me wrong, I love my ACOG, but its purpose is hitting man-sized targets hundreds of yards away.

You are correct in that the 6920 will give you more flexibility. Not only with the selection of rails, but with the barrels. From what I understand, the 6940 uses a proprietary barrel nut, and should you wear out a barrel or decide to swap it for some other reason, you're screwed.

Here's my LE6920 with Magpul CTR stock, Tango Down Battle Grip, Geiselle SSA trigger, Aimpoint Comp ML2 in a quick-detach LaRue mount, Troy Back Up Sight, Troy MRF-DI rail with Magpul XTM covers, Gear Sector Hand Stop, Surefire Scout with a TLS Head sitting in an offset Gear Sector mount, and an Advanced Armament Blackout flash hider. All slung up with a Blue Force Larry Vickers sling in quick-detach swivels. For a fighting carbine, this has everything I need and nothing I don't. With carbine length rails, you are limited with the real estate for placement of grips, lights and other accessories, but it is definitely workable.

Hope that helps!
