Illinois is just awful

Although Illinois' concealed carry bill was defeated in the House in May, a West Side democratic state legislator has suggested after a heated town hall meeting that he may support a measure allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons if it crossed his desk again.
Saying words can get people re-elected.

Hey, that's a lot for the Huff Po.

I like this part especially:
Ford, who surprised gun control advocates by voting "present" in the most recent concealed carry proposal to come to a vote in the General Assembly

Now what other Chicago politician had a history of voting 'Present'?

So, basically he abstained from voting yeah or nay, entirely political, if you know it'll go down in flames, no need to get your hands dirty, and you can make hay with it.

Funny story. My cousin lives in Illinois and she is married to a police detective. He is big on pistols. Carry glock with him everywhere he goes. Came to my house and I showed him my new 9mm I bought. Told him I had holster on order. Just waiting for it. He said you cant carry that where Im from. Only police can. I said well your in my state now buddy. Were all carryin over here. Ill never forget his facial expression.

MrSlim, tell him Indiana has Americans living in it. Whereas Illinois has serfs. Why do some law enforcement people have their heads so firmly embedded..?

Uh... rep Ford would be in favor of hb148 if there were some provisions for specialized training for police. Todd Vandermyde, our NRA lobbyist, has already stated that he would want to sit down with him to work something out.

A black Chicago Democrat has basically said he is for RTC in Illinois.

This is a good thing.

mrslim, people like that shouldn't visit AZ for health reasons - they might have a heart attack from all of our un-fettered rights...

Bush II did the same thing with the Assault Weapon Ban...

We had 3 votes switch on us at the last minute. We need a veto-proof majority to get a CCW bill passed. Since we needed a veto-proof majority we went for a "must issue" liscense which required the same votes to overcome Illinois's home-rule.

We are trying now in the courts. The case is Shepard v. Madigan. The NRA is with us.

It will happen someday. We must continue to fight and pressure and support the NRA.

To quote Billy Bragg

"Stand up, all victims of oppression, for the tyrants fear your might."

You think that's funny?
Try being around some twerp from New Yawk who gets himself out west and runs into somebody open carrying. That's always good for a cardiac.

"I can't believe they let you carry guns out here!"

'Uhhhh, nobody let's us do anything out here."

A couple of years ago I was chatting with this ATF guy who had spent his career in D.C and had never been west of the Mississippi. He was coming out to Portland Oregon for some kind of conference and I told him straight up, "You're in for a culture shock, pal. First and foremost, if you see some private citizen with a handgun, keep your pie hole shut and mind your own business."

I don't think east coasties like being told that.

^ I had the funniest incident with an Aussie chick while I was open carrying an AK. She saw me, screamed "HE'S GOT A [redacted]-ING GUN!" and then she ran off the sidewalk and hid behind a tree, and I swear she started desperately 119 or whatever number they use the Australia for the police.

Serfs? I have lived in IL my entire life and never once felt like a serf. IL is far from perfect but trust me most of the rest of the country is not either.

With the exception of the lack of concealed carry and the FOID card most of the state is fairly gun friendly, outside of the chicago area.

PASA park outside Barry, IL was a long time home to both the USPSA nationals and the Masters International Shooting Championship. The USPSA single stack classic is still held their every year.

Also IL has numerous gun manufactuers, Springfield Armory, RRA, Armalite, DSA, LMT are all based out of IL. Also some pretty good gunsmiths, Dick Heinie and Canyon Creek Customs come to mind.

Personally I would be more irritated by a mag capacity ban (which IL does not have) then the lack of concealed carry.

What good does a Glock with a 33 round magazine at home do you when somebody tries to rob you in the street or carjack you?

Residents of Illinois have a DUTY BY LAW to be helpless victims of whatever violent criminal chooses to prey upon them outside of their home.

If you've always lived there I can understand how you've gotten used to it. Look, it is not meant to be a personal slight, but there is no way living under your system can be defended as a constitutional existence. And you are completely correct, you are not alone. The fact that you find it palatable is irrelevant.

While you can't carry in IL, you can still "transport" a gun as long as it's unloaded and cased. The Il Supreme Court decided that the console of a vehicle is a case, so residents do not have to go around completely unarmed. While it takes a few seconds to get a pistol out and load it, like they say, it's better than throwing rocks. In some of the "may issue" states, gun owners carry at the whim of the local officials.

It depends on the circumstances, police officers in IL carry high capacity glocks on their hips and wear bullet proof vests and still get killed by thugs. The simple possession of a firearm on your person does not grant immuninty to crime or bullets.

This is absolute hyperbolic nonsense, a friend of my was assualted a long time ago and he fought off his attacker with a hatchet, he was never charged with anything despite leaving a huge gash in his attackers ribs.

What are you talking about? I live in the US and have the same constitutional protections you do. Concealed carry is a state issue, not a federal one, even the current conservative majority on the SCOTUS would not say anything different. We own guns here in IL, the restriction are pretty mild compared to California, New Jersey and other states.

And you are completely correct, you are not alone. The fact that you find it palatable is irrelevant.

And so is the fact that you find it unpalatable.

Exactly, just because NY and CA have concealed carry, I would still rather live in IL. Sure a few wealthy and politically connected people can concealed carry in those states, but the majority can not. And they have "assault weapons" bans, mag restrictions and a whole lot of other unsavory firearms laws, that IL does not have.

I have to agree with Phil. Even though IL has a huge antigun culture, their laws and restrictions are not as bad. Only bad thing is, cannot have machine guns, or SBRs.

I live in the US and have the same constitutional protections you do.

You have Constitutional rights, but that cannot stop authority figures from doing horrible things to you in spite of the Constitution. The constitution is as valuble, while your rights are being trampled, as laws on the books about not hitting pedestrians while you are being run over by a car.

I'm not going to argue with you, Philo. If you're happy with the way things are, I am too. I don't quite understand how being restricted from carrying a loaded weapon is compliant with the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Maybe there's more to your laws than I understand. I don't live there. I wouldn't live there. And I wouldn't be so accepting of your situation. But that's just me. If you live in that culture long enough I can see where you would have to either accept the situation or become very upset. It's probably better to learn to live with it. So I commend you on your personal self control. The best way to change things is to keep fighting the good fight. Best of luck to you.

Who has a better chance of surviving unscathed, a cop WITH a gun or a cop WITHOUT a gun?

Who has a better chance of surviving unscathed, a female rape victim WITH a gun or a female rape victim WITHOUT a gun?

If the assailant was fought off with a hatchet, he was either unarmed or poorly armed.

It seems that you don't mind self-defense as long as its performed with an inferior tool, unlikely to be carried on the person, and unlikely to be effectively wielded by the average person.

Is it lawful to CARRY a hatchet for self-defense in Illinois? In Chicago?

Would you recommend a hatchet as an appropriate self-defense tool for a sixty year old woman?

Does Cross Breed make a tuckable IWB holster for a hatchet?

Hang it up. There's no justifying the enforced victim culture of Illinois.

I was raised in Chicago. Some of the elements which go into these laws and support for them are:
  1. Profound contempt for the public (especially the non-White public) by politicians and police.
  2. A preference for control over constitutional liberty.
  3. Racism and fear of those of different races and ethnicities, and especially fear of them being armed.
  4. The fantasy that police "protect" or even CAN "protect" individuals.

You have trouble understanding this situation because you probably come at it from a generally rational point of view, devoid of malice. Gun control in Illinois, and Chicago in particular are driven by fantasy, fear, corruption and hatred. I know you mean well, but you can't reason with that.
