I've never liked IWB, just not comfortable for me. I usually carry OWB, crossdraw.

Actully, I tend to carry crossdraw even when open carrying (let's not start that discussion, I do it when in the field). Pretty much everything is leather with either a thumg snap or strap. I've done it so long, I just naturally reach for my off side hip when I want to draw a handgun.

Could someone explain to me the difference between passive retention and a holster that is well-fit/made and just holds the weapon securely? I thought that was pretty much the definition of passive retention: all that is keeping the gun in is the fit of the holster.

You are correct, that is what passive retention is. At least I'm hoping that is what the OP is referring to.

Yes, this is (in my mind) passive retention. There are no significant retention systems, other than possibly a tightening screw or something like that to keep the weapon snug and in place. I consider a holster with a device that must be manually manipulated in order to draw the weapon an active retention holster.

Just out of curiosity:

What are some actual Active Retention IWB holsters? I don't recall ever seeing a single model like that, but the idea is super appealing to me.

It varies depending on clothing, where I'm going and gun. S&W model 15 and 1911, thumb break. P-11, derringer and 380, passive. S&W model 60 and P-11, pocket.

OSW with a high ride pancake Holster. And, no retention straps or locks.
The belt and holster are tight enough, IMO.
