Holster Options

Hey All,

I am trying to pick a holster for my CZ 40b. I don't have any experence with holsters, but have settled on High Noon Holsters as they have molds for the 40 and I like the look of there work. However I can't make up my mind on the style. I don't plan on carry this gun as a CCW, mostly looking for a way to conviently carry it. I like the should holsters, but have heard a lot of bad things about them. Also like paddle type as it is very convient. When it comes to active vs passive retention ect I get a little lost. Any guidance?

I haven't heard it phrased quite that way, but I suppose an active retention would have a safety strap over the gun, while passive merely relies on the fit of the holster to the gun with no safety strap. Outside of a uniformed LEO's security retention holster, there is little need for an extra safety strap, IMO. I don't bother with them on my own holsters. What, exactly? There should be no issue with HN's quality. There are issues with comfort, convenience and the fact that many ranges and training classes disallow them due to the muzzle pointing at everyone and everything behind you.

This is true, as there is no need to thread a belt through or snap over loops or slots. HN's are probably as good as any, and they offer both active and passive retention (Spanky and Speedy Spanky, respectively).

There are several levels and types of retention holster. Some use a thumb-break or other kind of strap. Some use a locking tab that you have to depress a button to release as you draw (SERPA).

Some ultra safe holsters combine several of those features.

I shoot with a PA deputy game warden who's duty holster features a lock button, a bail (strap) that has to be flipped forward, AND a "rock-to-release" draw motion for three levels of retention.

Personally, I don't use them, but if you're going to open-carry one style of retention or another may certainly be a wise idea.

All I can say is I can personally attest to High Noon's quality, outstanding leather.

Haven't heard anything bad about High Noon shoulder holsters, just should holsters in general. Mostly that they are slow draws and dangerous. I like the set up though and have mags as part of the rig really appeals to me as a grab and go option. Probably more of a holster than I need though. So with passive retention holds the gun in pretty well? Am worried about loosing the gun if running or crawling ect.

+1 to armoredman, High Noon makes an extremely high quality product. I have the Down Under IWB and it is the most comfortable holster I have. I know you're not likely looking for IWB, but instead OWB so I can't help you beyond giving you a thumbs up on the brand. You could always call them and give them an idea of what you need and let them guide you.

Adding that the retention is excellent. I can hold my holster upside down and it retains my pistol.
