I am headed out to SD for some coyote hunting in mid Dec. These animals get to be big. I am looking to load a decent .223 with 55 gr (or so) pills for them. I was told FMJs are out as they do minimal damage and make recovery difficult. We will be hunting at night during full moon - hopefully minimal cloud cover.
I am looking for the right bullet - minimal pelt damage with maximum enegery deposit *inside* the animal. Any ideas? Thanks.

I use a 60gr Hornady V-Max bullet when I can find them. Seem to be rare around me, most V-Max on the shelf are 40-55 gr. I stock up whenever my LGS gets them.

Ahh Well I see I am a bit late. The 50gr Barnes Varmint Grenade out of the .223 has really been gaining some popularity in the pelt community. They will pretty much turn a yote inside out. Very rarely exit and flat out grenade them on the inside. Hence the name.

BUT I have been using the V-Max since it came out in the 220swift with pretty much the same results. Closest I have let a yote get to me with the 220swift has been 75 yards and only a small piece exited then. Furthest yote was right at 325yds right in the chest. No exit but it sure was a "mell of a hess" on the inside :barf: So they perform, for me in a 220swift, very well both close and longer range. If your rifle likes them, the V-Max should make you a happy pelt hunter.

Good Luck

I've loaded 55 grain V-Max bullets ahead of 24.0 grains of A2230 and CCI regular primers to COAL of 2.335". I'm shooting them in my Tikka, 22" barrel and they group just over 1/4" at 100 yards. They should work well on coyotes.

The only thing I've shot with them so far is a woodchuck and a crow, but I normally use a .243 Win for Coyotes.

Thanks guys. The 220 swift is quite a screemer. I like the AA2230 because it meters so well. I will load the 50 gr V-max with 24.0 gr of AA 2230 with COL = 2.260 and report back. Hopefully my Ruger MKII 77 Varmint and TC Encore PH like them. Have to head to a tradeshow in Chicago this Fri - coming back next Fri :cuss:
