Wallmart JHP Ammo Question

Both rounds are OK from a full size handgun but may not expand from a compact. You get what you pay for, I keep a couple boxes of these around just in case.

115 was the standard 9mm weight for decades. It's just fine because it comes packaged with some good velocity.

147 has often been considered 'too slow' to expand, but that's in conversations concerning old-fashioned JHP's (which Winchester JHP probably is) out of a compact handgun (which your G17 is not).

Grab a box of both and hit the range. Pick whichever you shoot best.

Personally, I prefer +P loads in either 115gr or 124gr. I've never been that impressed by 147s unless used with a suppressor.

After running ~100 rounds of your carry load to check function just use FMJ. There really isn't that much difference.

Shoot any JHP. Just practice enough so you can reliably hit what you aim at. That's what counts. I suggest the 115g WWB (Winchester White Box) for most of your practice. At self-defense ranges, you can't tell the difference between it and most JHP. Trigger control is the beginning of accuracy.

If this is truly only for HD, get a shot gun (too). I use a Mossberg Camper Special. It's 30 years old so I don't know what it's called now. $99 with a storage pouch back then. It's an 18 1/4 inch barrel 20 ga pump with a pistol grip instead of a stock. It's loaded with five 2 3/4" #6 shells. Sweet in tight places like the hall way or bathroom and can be handled by the wife (barely). Also, it won't take out the neighbors if I miss the BG.

I'll consider it next time I need to shoot water.

I have found that 9mm Glocks are more ACCURATE and CONSISTENT with 124 gr. loads.

Shoot the cheap stuff (115gr.) for practice and general range fun. Get your self some of the 124gr +P for carry, shoot some at the range for a weapons check.

The 115 gr. vs. 147 gr. debate is false. Practice, get some training, make your head shots!!

What pistol did you get?

That Remington 115 grain JHP stuff is very good ammo for the price. Its very accurate out of both of my nines. I use it for practice ammo and Hornady Critical Defense for carry.

In terms of handgun effectiveness, where you put the bullet on the target is far more important than which bullet it happens to be.

IMHO getting more practice is far better than buying more expensive ammo.

The WWB FMJ is close enough in recoil characteristics and point of impact to the JHP. (For that matter, I can feel little difference in recoil between almost all of the 9mm loadings, save for the NATO.) I see no need to spend the extra bucks for the JHP just for range practice. Just shoot enough to verify functioning and save the rest for carry.

FMJ or JHP doesnt matter in your gun. Its putting them in the right spot that counts.

The Winchester 147gr JHP load is excellent.

That's what is in my PF9. It's little-brother ammo (88-grain JHP in .380) is in my Bersa Thunder.

Remington Golden Saber can be bought reasonable....and it shoots pretty decent.

The cheap Remington JHP has a LOT of flash. Most I have ever seen on a JHP before. I tried 1 box and never got it again. Also, I got peppered with junk out of the ejection port that never happened with other brands

I think it is loaded with Power Pistol.
