I am going to use a Beretta 92 for HD; I want to stick with something that is effective, yet not very costly; I want to use Winchester WWB Personal Defense jhp ammo; the 147 gr stuff has been tested and results recorded at Glock Talk; I haven't seen anything for their 115 gr stuff; the Winchester Personal Defense stuff isn't very costly and I don't have alot to spend;

which one...115 gr or 147 gr? thanks

Don't get cheap on ammo. The lives of you and your family are worth more than the very few dollars that effective quality ammo costs. If you shop around you can find deals on 50 round boxes of high quality ammo--I got 124 +P Gold Dots for less than $20 a box last year. Even if not, buying a couple of boxes of defense ammo is nothing if you factor how long it will be protecting you.

I recommend using quality hollow-point ammo such as Remington Golden Sabers, Speer Gold Dots, or Federal Hydrashocks (I use the new HSTs myself). They're a bit more than the WWB brand, but are all proven to expand reliably. I seem to shoot better using 124 gr. loads.

I don't think I'm going to add much that the others haven't said: I'd try several types of rounds to see what works well with you gun and, as importantly, what you shoot well.

I like the lighter grain rounds, but that's just me.

This is you home defense pistol, so don't let the price of ammo dissuade you from trying several out.

Good luck,

like I said...money is a bit tight; even if I can snag premium loads at @25% below average retail, I still get hit with shipping, handling, and sometimes a "hazmat" or "ammo classification" surcharge...all this adds up

I spoke about the Winchester WWB Personal Defense stuff 'cuz it delivers performance similar to the SXT line without the premium load price;

sorry to have bothered y'all...I'll try the 2 loads and see which one prints closer to POA/POI and for accuracy; later

Don't get hung up on buying "cheap" ammo when tests show it performs just as well.

I trust the WWB 147gr 9mm hollowpoint load as my personal defense round and find that it shoots very well. I prefer heavier 9mm bullets because I feel penetration trumps expansion and I would rather my shots go too deep than not deep enough.

Practice with the cheaper stuff (ball's fine for training) but keep your 92 loaded with high quality (not necessarily the most expensive) self-defense loads.

You got it right kmrcstintn, just try both to see which one hits POA and more importantly which one (if not both) functions 100% ... be sure to try shooting it one handed and weak handed. I would prefer the 147s but function is the main priority. ;)

I have always heard that the 147 grainers did not function as good as 115 or 124... I have shot the 147's out of beretta no problem, out of CZ 75B minor problems. I shoot the 124 jhp i think I payed $8 for 50 rounds and I have had them for 6 months-- I regularly shoot 115's, definate difference in recoil

I've no problems with WWB ammo. 115 or 147? Use whatever works best. If they both work great, then use either one.

I load my HD Beretta with Golden Saber 115gr +P ammo. In a 9mm you definitely want to go with the better quality makers, and especially a good JHP. $30 a box might sound like you can't afford it, but you spend that much (or more) every time you fill up your car or truck with gas.
