so, i went to the gun store to put my paws on a smith 686 plus. I wanted to see the 3" and the 4" barrel. I'm really torn on which one i want. Anyways, one of the guys in the store told me that the 4" barrel had the square butt, and the 3" had the round butt. The only reason i'm concerned, is because i don't like the grips that are on the guns on the smith website so, i'm curious as to which grips i'll want if the butt shapes are different. Can someone please clarify for me? thanks...........hvychev77

IIRC all current manufacture 686s are round butt with square to round butt adapter type grips used for square butt orders.

From what I know all the S&W M686 Plus revolvers are round butt models. Like said above, they may have a round to square grip installed.

As for which to buy, what are you going to use it for? If you are going to carry it I feel the 2.5" or 3" would be a better choice because it's easier to carry. For the range a 4" or even 6" barrel is a better choice.

Just for information, the M686+ (7 round version) is available with a 2.5", 3", 4" and a 6" barrel.
The M686 (6 shooter) is available with a 2.5", 4" and a 6" barrel. (I have no idea why no 3")
There is also a 7 round 2.5" M386 Night Guard which is probably the best L frame .357 Magnum concealed carry model in the S&W line.

686s can have either round or square butts, my 686+ is a square butt and it's an extremely accurate shooter.

I believe Davidson's is offering two 3"/6 shot models, one coming from TALO IIRC. :)

Is the M686+ really a square butt revolver? I didn't think any of the current S&W revolver were square butt. (I said current, not the Classic line) The M686+ is a fairly current revolver.

i think that all of the 686's produced now are round butts. after i made this post last night i got to doing some reading online and somewhere i read stated that all of them after some year in the early nineties were round butts and still are........but, i'm new to revolvers so, don't take my word on it. thanks for the replies guys. cheers, hvychev77

i actually called smith & wesson to ask 'em since i'm just so anal like that. They are all definitely round butt framed guns that are produced nowadays........

Before you lay down your money, make sure the cylinder has the same number of chambers and flutes.

The evil twin of my 686 SSR might be out there somewhere.

The current production M686+ #164194 has a square butt according to Davidson's, but Davidson's is incorrect. After getting my 686+ out of the safe, it is clearly a round butt, I apologize for mistakenly stating it was a square butt.

Now if we can only get Davidson's to correct their website descriptions. :)
