I have an opportunity to trade a Smith Wesson Pro 9mm for a Smith 686 4 inch barrel square butt revolver. This revolver has the original grips, box, papers.

When were the square butt 686 revolvers made? Are these highly desirable handguns?

I don't know the year S&W changed from square butt to round butt. If the 686 is in good shape I believe you will be getting the better part of the deal. I carried a 686-1 (square butt) as an armed security officer for several years and had no problems at all. It was one of my best duty weapons. It will take any factory 357 Magnum load and ask for more. The plus is being able to fire 38 Special (2 guns for the price of one). Are they desirable? I would say to some they are to others maybe not. One thing is certain, the 686 is one of S&W's finest models for serious shooters.

I have a M686-2 (1987) which also has a square butt and it's one of my favorite revolvers and goes with me on most range trips. Being able to trade for a no-lock revolver without MIM parts for a current production 9mm is a good deal IMO.

I do not know the year S&W went to the round butt 686. However, I have several 686 square butts which I really like. While I have round butts in several other S&Ws that I own, I like the feel of the square butt. I would do the trade if the 686 is in nice shape.

Provided the revolver is in good shape, if it was me I'da gotter done before the other guy sobered up. But I'm a S&W revolver fanboi. ;)
