What Lubricants Do You Use?

Hello,

I'm trying to find an excellent lube/metal conditioner that will stick to bolts on my rifles much better than traditional grease.

I keep coming across an astounding number of products, mostly what I'd consider overpriced.

Militec-1 is one example. Supposedly folks in the sandbox are ordering it by the metric buttload but the DoD says NOT to use it (big ol' long PDF file on that one!)

I use cleaner to clean. I'm not looking for a CLP... Breakfree CLP is excellent for getting your rifle going again (I used it in Appleseed, anyway, to keep a 10/22 from puking), but I prefer to clean and then use a metal conditioner that impregnates itself to metal and won't leave. I hate working dry bolts!

Regular oil isn't cutting it. The rifle heats and it migrates to parts unknown.

What do you folks use?

Any quality grease IMO. Moly paste wheel bearing grease. Lubriplate. Plastilube. Frog Lube. ZZ$SS(#(@!!!!-s12111 super awesome tasty lube.

I've been using a lot of this lately and I like it.

^This. Or if you're on a budget, Outer's Gunslick for grease and ATF for lube. Ballistol is also a good all purpose lube.
 
Gun lube

I use Ballistol on almost everything. If you spray it on and let it sit for 5 minutes, it will thicken. You then just lightly wipe it, and it will leave a super slick film. I discovered the guys in the machine shop in my place of work use it a lot; and I tried it. Been using it ever since.
 
I like lubriplate for the slide on the 1911's, magazine tube spring on lever guns and bolt lugs. I tend not to use lubriplate for guns used in winter time at temps below zero F.. "Lubriplate is very sticky/tacky". Mobil 1 synthetic oil for wipe down, general metal surfaces or inside of magazine tube surface. Mobil 1 and two stroke snowmobile oil are ok for cold weather operation. Some may prefer dry (no lube) in very cold weather. Everyone has a different pattern and ideas as to what is best. I only have one lever action that uses a rebounding hammer and I use only synthetic oil on that one and never use it in below 32° F.

I use this stuff called Kroil. It's an industrial lubricant. It can be found through commercial supply houses, to my knowledge it isn't sold in ordinary retail outlets. Ask any tradesman that uses aresol lubricants and he can probably tell you where to get it. I have used it on exhaust bolts on auto mobiles and they practically spin themselves out, great penetrating oil, much better than even Liquid Wrench. I use it on my guns as well and it has worked well for me. Plus it smells great!
 
I use white lithium grease and synthetic motor oil, in different places though. For very cold weather either nothing or a bit of graphite.
 
Any high viscosity full synthetic motor oil used sparingly oughtta do well. I've been using a 20w50 (it behaves like a light grease) for over fifteen years on all of my guns (Glocks, HKs, S&Ws, Rugers, AK47s, Tikkas and Winchesters) with great satisfaction and wonderful performance.
 
I wouldn't use Kroil Penetrating Oil on bolt lugs. I would use grease.

Kroil also works well for bore cleaning. Auto Zone sells it. Use it with J-B Bore Cleaner.
