I have decided on my next gun purchase! :)

Sorry I haven't been too active on THR lately, I've been quite busy. I finally found a job at a vineyard close by and work from 4:00 PM to 3:00 AM but I'm usually working on my projects between work. I thought I'd break the news that I'm saving up for a steel framed Remington New Model Army now! I know I threatened to get one several times and got distracted or needed to buy caps or got distracted by nice .22s or whatever, but I'm darn serious.

My question is where is the cheapest place to buy a steel framed .44 Remington, preferably Pietta? I know Cabelas isn't having their sale on them anymore, I just don't like the idea of shelling out $220 when they were selling for $175 not too long ago.

I just want a big powerful smoke wheel that I don't have to worry about overloading, with the reliability I've come to trust with my brass Remmy.

I also have been contemplating building a .22 LR conversion cylinder for my New Model Army, I'm trying to come up with a full-length barrel that will slip into the existing barrel from the muzzle giving me the full performance of a .22 LR in an 8" barrel, and the versatility of a drop in conversion cylinder. I can shoot .22s or .44s!

Thanks for the links guys! I guess Cabelas is cheaper than most other places. One of the main reasons I have decided on getting one now is because I don't want to look and see them for $250 later on, that would be a huge bummer.

Phil, you sir are the best! I can't believe they'd sell for $125, that's an awesome deal! From what I can tell shipping to CA is legal, it's just we can't have handgun ammo and stuff like that shipped due to the restrictions.

I have been going between the 1060 Colt Army and the Remington for a while now, I've pretty much decided that a Remmy would be the best way to go because I could mount some target sights on it and put a .45 Colt conversion cylinder in and have a nice big .45 single action. I am considering getting some stuff to plate it in nickle, that might look good although I'm not 100% sure I want to do that yet. Something about blued steel is just plain good looking to me. It kind of appeals to the classier shooter as opposed to just stainless steel, although nickle would be kind of classy I think if I were to polish it really well and perhaps engrave the pistol with some old west looking scroll pattern on the frame and maybe the cylinder.

My .22 LR converter is going to have a full length barrel, I'm still figuring out how I will make it so the .22 barrel slips into the .44 barrel and stays there. One possibility is that I might cut a piece of steel that will be threaded with a hole that will accept the .22 barrel so it could be inserted from the muzzle to the forcing cone and screwed in there, then the base pin will go through it and lock it in one place. I could also take advantage of having that piece of steel where it is and put some kind of extractor in place. Now that would be a fun gun for sure! I'm thinking for the extractor I could drill and tap a hole big enough for a small steel tube, thread the tube and secure it with some silver solder, then figure out some kind of spring and plunger type device with a little handle like a Colt SAA to kick out the brass.

Sorry if I'm rambling a little, I have quite a few good ideas for a converter. Boy I'd love a .22 LR converter, only problem is I want to have 8" barrel performance instead of a 2" barrel and the performance that gives with the factory made converters have.

Good point BHP FAN, I've gotten pretty much all my BP guns from the mail. I have never had the slightest problem with getting guns shipped to me.

You know what I don't get is why it's fine to have a New Model Army and a conversion cylinder (probably even in the same box) shipped right to your door, but you can't just order a box of 9mm ammo from what I understand. I don't know if they changed the law, I did get a couple boxes of .22 shorts in the mail about a month ago and nobody stopped me. IIRC .22 short is a pistol round, but I shot all of them out of my rifles. I mean I'm not talking 9mm or .45 ACP, those are definitely pistol rounds. But .22 short I guess is less of a pistol round than other stuff like that, you could shoot it out of a rifle for less noise.

Well, not actually. As I mentioned I ordered some .22 shorts from Gander Mountain, that's a pistol cartridge.

That there is a good idea. I think I'll get a really nice Remington, and I mean really nice.

Sadly I'm not actually making the wine itself, I'm just in the packaging department. But it's a good job, I like staying up all night! It's kind of a staggered schedule but I like it!

In Sonoma we have something like 135 wineries, I mean if you look at it with Google Maps you can see just rows of grapes! We also have some really cool history here too, sadly no Civil War history I know of but it's still interesting. We do have a few cannons though, one is within walking distance of where I live and another is in the mission right off the town square.
