Double build: .44 Remington and .22 Remmy conversion

It kind of makes me wonder, in the history of mankind has anyone actually died from an injury inflicted by rose thorns? That would be embarrassing.
"So how did your husband die?"
"He got so cut up by the roses out front that he bled out."

I have something cool in mind for this Remmy. I just put the barrel and frame into a tub of vinegar to strip off all the bluing. I'm going to brown it all and make it look really nice. Although, I'll see how it looks in the white, if I like it I will keep it that way.

It would be awesome to have another barrel for this and figure out how to make interchangeable barrels. I'd go with a 5 1/2", my regular 8", and a little 3" one in .38 so I could get a conversion cylinder and tuck it in my jacket when I'm out hiking or hunting. It would be kinda cool to have a little .38 snub based off a Remmy!

Levi, Here is mine I did with just vinegar. This is my Euroarms and the 1st
place medal I got at Friendship last month. This was a 25 yd match,

That looks awesome Phil! :) I was going for that same kind of finish and I think I nailed it, I will post a picture soon.

And congratulations on the first place medal, out of curiosity how did you manage your bells palsy during the match? I reckon all the prayers from fellow THR members muse be helping.

~Levi

Well yes the prayers did help. Thanks to all. Well I put a piece of frosty
scotch tape over the top part of the lens that I did not want to see thru.
This let in the light so my pupils would stay the same size.It kept me from
seeing the sights. When I loaded the revolver, I still had depth perception
by using both eyes to see thru the bottom half of the glasses. I really wasn't
feeling well so I just shot the "As Issue" revolver matches. I came in 1st in
that match and 3rd in the total agg. As if it wasn't enough to getting beat
all the time here at our local club by my wife I travel 600 miles to Guess What? Yes you guessed it, I got beat out of second place by another woman. Not my wife either. She did not shoot the "As Issue" revolver. Come
on guys, lets hear it for poor old Phil wa,wa,wa.:what::what:

She is a good friend of ours from Ohio tho. And she didn't feel the least bit sorry either. wa,wa,wa.

Why you old goat, not going to feel sorry for me that Bird beat me in the Agg?
Mike her husband is the one who put the tape on my lens. He always carrys a roll.
I think he wanted to put the tape on both lens. Probably my mouth too!!

Max load of 777 in a steel frame Remington NA is a full chamber.
Considering what four grains behind a .22 will do out of a 2 5/8ths inch barrel I can't wait to see what kind of ballistics I can get, I love me a mighty powerful handgun! :)

I do have some really light conical bullets someone gave me, they are probably only 100 grains or so. It wouldn't surprise me to get 1400+ FPS. The very thought of that puts a big fat grin on my face! :D

Ain't feelin' sorry for anyone who can shoot that well but can't see past the end of the barrel. Last time I shot a competition offhand target at Friendship I got beat by an 11 year old girl. And everyone else. The first round I fired on that target was an X. The only problem was, it wasn't my target - I crossfired the one next to me. When's the last time your best shot of the day was on someone else's target?

I stripped the bluing off the gun, she looks fantastic in the white especially with those simulated ivory grips and brass trigger guard. I'm fixin' to get out to the range sometime and shoot this pistol. I need to blow some fat .44 holes in something, I haven't been able to think straight and I'm having trouble sleeping. That is precisely what happens when I don't shoot enough. I get all uneasy, can't sit still.

So I'll quit flappin' my gums at you guys and show you, here she is!

And who's that handsome outlaw holding it?

I'm pretty much done with this build, but I'm going to make a .22 short drop in cylinder for this pistol. You'll see when I get another cylinder. It will be just a plinking cylinder, not expecting too much accuracy from it. Minute of soda can accuracy is good enough for me.
I'm going to sleeve the cylinder with rifled liners and chamber it for shorts, I love the .22 short. It's one of my favorite calibers.

To arms!

You've done a really good job on both of these guns. For the .38 you mention, you might look for a Remington in .36 and line the barrel down to .357 so you can use regular sized bullets. Then for .22 conversion, I would think that you could make an insert to fit inside the bore. There used to be something like that made for revolvers but I can't think of who made it - but it also used cartridge inserts that the .22 rounds fit into. I think Kirst also started doing something like that but with a replacement cylinder.
Maybe the insert could slide down the bore and be secured through some attachment at the forcing cone, then have a shortened cylinder for .22LR inserted to further secure it. Even just the .22LR cylinder itself might be able to be lined with barrel stock and a chamber cut in each one - but I don't know how much rifling would be needed to stabilize a .22LR bullet or if it could shoot accurately enough without a fixed barrel.
But from the looks of things, you're doing just fine coming up with your own ideas. Very cool stuff! I hope you can pursue gunsmithing as a trade.

Good idea and thanks Goon! What about this one, I get a .36 caliber Remington, line the barrel to .357 and get a conversion cylinder for .38 Special. Then line the .36 caliber cylinder to the right diameter so it's pretty much a .35 caliber cap and ball revolver. Then, I could port the barrel toward the last 1/2" and tap the ports. I could get a .22 caliber barrel with an offset bore, turn it to the correct size on my lath, cut a forcing cone, and drill into that about 1/8th an inch, tap the holes. That way a .22 caliber barrel just slides right in there and secures via some little screws and an Allen wrench no problem. But for the .22 chamber I could fire up the lath, and turn six inserts that are the same dimensions as a standard .38 special cartridge with the exception they go to the end of the chamber to the forcing cone as to keep the expanding gasses from escaping.

But for the offset cartridges to work, they will need to have a small pin protruding from the side, like an extension of the rim that will keep them in the same exact place in the chamber every single time.

There you go, three guns in one. A .22 revolver, a .38 special, and a .357 percussion revolver on the frame of a Remington 1858. That would be a pleasure to own.

I do have another real awesome project in mind, I'm thinking about finding a used Remington 1863 pocket, it doesn't matter if it looks like crap because I can polish it up. Then I can make two cylinders for it, one is a .22 short/Long rifle cylinder, and one is a .22 cap and ball cylinder.

I like your idea for securing it. I think the conversion unit I'm thinking of might be called a Lothar Walther conversion.

http://www.lothar-walther.de/200.php

Just in case that gives you any ideas.
I also think Uberti is currently making a "conversion" chambered for .38 Special, so you might check to see if one of those cylinders would work. Or if a standard Uberti .36 caliber cylinder would fit one of those guns - then you could just line the percussion cylinder to the right size ball and cast them yourself.

Hmmm... Will you have any problem with corrosion? Is there a lacquer coat on it? Are you going to put some sort of protective coating on it? Bluing, plating, or lacquer... You could clear coat lacquer it.....

Wow, a million bucks!

Nope, I'm just going to leave it as is, let nature take it's course. It should get a good patina as the years go by, sorta like a good carbon steel knife. Of course I am good about cleaning right after I shoot, so I don't think corrosion would be a huge issue.

I am thinking about nickle plating this gun though. Carbon steel does look nice, but I think a good coat of nickle would look downright classy and would do a decent job at protecting it.

By the way, I like your signature line. The second amendment and first amendment go hand in hand. Not to mention the second amendment gives us the power to protect all other rights. That's the great thing about this country, we've got a bill of rights and a second amendment to protect said rights from those that want to do away with them.

~Levi

I was going to put Acts 5:29 where I have "If you take away my second amendment, you are messing with my first amendment.", but it didn't work when I tried to change it. Acts 5:29 says,
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
but when I tried to edit my signature, it didn't work, so I just left it alone...
I put that verse there to refute those people that say that our right to keep and bear arms isn't a God given right.

Yeah, I think that nickel would look good on a cap and ball... Just don't blow anything up by putting too much extra metal where it shouldn't be...
