H&R Model 676: Good first pistol

I had a 676 years ago. I wish I would have kept it. It was very accurate and easy to shoot. A 676 is a revolver though, not a pistol. Pistols are semi-autos.

While racoon hunting I used to shoot racoons out of the tops of the trees with my 676 with no problems, as long as someone spotted them for me with a light. Of the H&Rs out there I always thought the 676 was one of the easiest to shoot.

As far as your question of "what pistol should I get for my first gun?" again, pistol or revolver? You mentioned both in the same context.

We can't offer opinions until we know the answer to that one.

Again, I wish I would have kept my 676.

Revolvers are pistols. I think you are a bit mixed up there. That's like saying a pony isn't an equine.

Use of the term 'pistol' to refer to auto-loaders only is a relatively recent convention.

"pistol (n.)

"small hand-held firearm," c.1570, from M.Fr. pistole "short firearm" (1566), of uncertain origin, sometimes said to be from Ger. Pistole, from Czech pis'tala "firearm," lit. "tube, pipe," from pisteti "to whistle," of imitative origin, related to Rus. pischal "shepherd's pipe." But earlier form pistolet (1550) is from M.Fr. pistolet "a small firearm," also "a small dagger," which may be the literal sense; though some connect this word with It. pistolese, in reference to Pistoia, town in Tuscany noted for gunsmithing. Pistol-whip is first recorded 1942."

I stand corrected.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. When I was a kid they all were pistols but now a days, especially on here, it doesn't seam so.

thanks again.
