Good News...Cabelas coming to Delaware

Wow that should be closer than Hamburg...and I live in PA!

There was supposed to be a Cabelas opening in Richmond VA...but that apparently died out about 3 years ago. It absolutely baffles me that there are non in the Southeast.

I have heard rumblings of non-compete agreements or outright stonewalling by Bass Pro Shops. The Bass Pro in Richmond is impressive as far as decor, and is not impressive at all as far as inventory. I loved the Cabelas in Hamburg when I stopped in.

It is really nice. My wife and I did a family trip day with our daughter and had a lot of fun. Could have lived without the catastrophic diaper failure and to change my daughters whole outfit, but hey that's infants. lol

There was also one announced for Calhoun GA (between Chattanooga TN and Atlanta GA) along I-75. Never happened. I heard that the land developers got a bit greedy and Cabelas bolted. Cabelas claimed their market studies did not justify a store in that immediate area. But I would have thought they would have done those before announcing a store. There is a Bass Pro in NE Atlanta and a Sportsman Warehouse in Chattanooga TN. Bass Pro stores in Sevierville TN and Nashville TN also. Academy has two stores in Chattanooga TN.

The post got me interested. I see that they just announced a store in Bristol VA (2014) which is at the TN-VA border. So I believe that one will be closer to me, but I get to Louisville periodically, so I will visit that store.

I see Louisville is scheduled to be opened in Spring 2013.

Oh joy, Cabelas opened a store in Grand Junction Colorado. Not 10 minutes from my house. It's one of the smaller stores but very nice. Now, truth be told, I have a Cabelas Club visa. I do like to wander around the store. It is very nice. The employees are friendly and helpful. I have used my Cabelas points for some nice stuff. They do stock quality merchandise.

When you go into a Cabelas store (or at least this one) you better keep a tight grip on your wallet. There are very few items I cannot get at a much better price elsewhere, locally or online. Firearms prices at this store trend towards the delusional range. Trade in a firearm? Prepare to be hosed. Buy a used firearm? No negotiations, prepare to be hosed. Buy a new firearm? Same sad story. But it is a nice store

Now, maybe your experience at Cabelas will be different than mine. Do not be lulled by the Cabelas name. Compare prices with your local sporting goods store and online outlets. Beware of impulse purchases. I've regretted buying a buck knife there that I could have saved about $7 on if I had looked around. Cabelas environment is geared towards getting your knuckles dragging, your fangs out and thinking about just how cool that (insert name of new toy here) is going to be when you get it home. Caveat Emptor my friends. But it is a nice store.

That's wonderful in so many ways (shopping as well as gun-rights immediately come to mind)! I love to go to the one here in STL, MO. and my younger kin do as well (for the young ones, it's almost a mini adventure just to see the exhibitions, fish tanks etc.).

Based on my experience with the local (2-3 years old) Cabelas:

1) Don't expect the people who work in the gun area to actually know anything about guns, although there are occasional glimpses of knowledge. As previously noted, be prepared to pay too much to buy and get nothing for sell or trade.

2) Always be prepared for the gun counter(s) to be packed with sightseers and people who have no real interest in or ability to buy a gun

3) The constant and annoying "pop" of four year-olds playing with the cork popguns will drive you insane.

But all things considered I still go there for reloading supplies, the only local opportunity.

Oh, geez...I thought the Cabelas near me was the only one that had this going on.

The Cabela's in Grand Rapids, Mich will open this spring. It's the smaller size store but who cares. Drove by it today and they have the walls up and half the roof. I can spend half the day walking around their store in Dundee Mich.

Yes, both Bass Pro and Cabela's are tourist attractions. I love to visit, but do hold onto your wallet especially if you are not real affluent but still have the deep seated desire to buy stuff they carry.

Sometimes Cabela's will have decent sale prices on items. Otherwise they have so much overhead that almost all of their items can be found cheaper elsewhere.

I do like wandering around the store for the cool exhibits and atmosphere. The one here in Boise, ID has the Elmer Keith museum.

If I can find the time I like to drive out a little ways to Sportsman's Warehouse. They typically have better quality items and cheaper prices on almost everything. Plus the gun counter guys there seem to know more.

They came to Nevada. Now I have to pay a 7.75% SALES TAX ON WHAT I ORDER. I DON'T BUY FROM THEM MUCH ANYMORE.

Note that their ads are not reflective on what is in stock. If you make a special trip be sure to check if the item is there! I wanted a rifle for a good sale price and found out they didn't have it AND there were only 4 in stock in the entire USA. Hmm!

Also, their cargo pants fall apart quickly and they won't make good on replacement.

So, use them for sales and entertainment - Bass Pro has better clothes.

That is usually true of any retailer. Ads are set weeks or even months in advance. If a supplier has a problem then the stores will not get the items.

Midway is the same way. Tons of stuff they put in their sales fliers have not been in stock for a month or more, and they don't expect to get the items in stock for another month or more.

Two more observations on Cabela's:

1) Silly pricing on used guns can result in a used gun actually costing more than the same gun they are selling new as part of a chainwide promotion, seen this happen with both Taurus 1911's and Ruger MK III's.

2) They will price match in the store with any of their "internet special" pricing. I've gotten a couple of nice deals on stuff by printing out the .com pricing and taking it in to the store. Especially nice on internet closeouts that are still on the shelf in the store.

Personally, I avoid the "C" store. Sure, they are attractive but, holy-moly they are proud of the China merchandise. I learned my lesson at the check out, ONCE. Any time I'm cornered into a purchase there I take cash and tell the clerk before they even start to ring it up, "I don't have a Cabelas card, I don't want a card and no, you can't have my zip code or phone number". Come to find out after they got all the tax incentives to build here the sq footage of the wild life displays are exempt as they are classified as a "museum". I'll buy from the local mom and pop, thank you very much.

We also have one coming this next summer. I have been down to the one in near Milwaukee a few times. It's a fun place to spend the day. I have found some good deals in the bargin cave.

We have a two Cabela's in the DFW Metromess. I shop in one of them. What I want here in DFW is Sportsman's Warehouse.

Currently my nearest store is in Wheeling WV, however, there is a proposed store for Columbus, Ohio around the spring of 2013. On the bright side we have a Gander Mountain a few miles from us. Good deals on bulk ammo sometimes.

Something I like about Cabela's is their Cabela's Club Visa. I use the card for large purchases and get the Cabela's Points which at Christmas we use to send gifts to friends and family. We send the assorted food sampler packs and people love them. Works out well as my wife just calls and they already have all the information for who to send things to. The breakfast meats like bacon and sausage are popular. Good stuff.

Columbus has the first Ohio Cabela's store coming this spring to the Polaris Mall area (Gemini Parkway).
It will be one of the new smaller 80,000 sq.ft. stores though. By comparison, the one in Wheeling WV is 175,000 and the one in Dundee MI is 225,000.
It's still going to be great to have a Cabela's five minutes from my house...and 'Vance's Shooters Supply' is only five minutes in the other direction.

I have almost no use for Cabelas. My local gun store(s) will beat them silly on guns and hazmat items. For other reloading, Grafs has $6 shipping. Almost any item can be shipped to my front door for much less.

If I wanted Chinese or Vietnamese products with the Cabelas logo plastered all over them, they are good for that.

All this makes me kind of sad. I remember when they were actually a decent outfitter.

For me it's more a fun trip with the family and the ability to buy things in person.

How do you think I felt after working 3 months in the Santa's Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops...the part of the store where kids are openly encouraged to play with the toys

however the employee discount, at 40% off house brands made it all worth it, even the uniform
