Christiana Mall Delaware Cabela's February 11, 2015

10:00 arrive at store, got to gun counter to purchase non-ffl bp repliica revolver. Knew what I wanted, they had at least one each.

10:20 still waiting to be waited on, nowhere to sit, kind of just standing at parade rest civilian style.

11:10 finally after an ordeal I hesitate to post am handed bare revolver at front door by young lady in New Castle County were open carry is legal and the police don't give a damn about that if somebody calls it in.

Twenty four hours later can't get to speak with anyone who can do anything but apologize and forward my remarks to corporate.

Most of us know about the young man killed by police in a state with legal open carry because he was buying a bb gun at wal mart and somebody 911'd 'man with a gun'. He was talking on his cell phone and was cut down.

Please be safe out there, and don't let any inexperienced friends or family deal with Cabela's on guns. Me? I'm outta there like a gun free zone with free tofu and literature.

the idiot shot with the "BB Gun" was told multiple times to put the weapon down before he was shot for non compliance with a dangerous weapon.

Your post is almost cryptic- would you care to try again in English? What is your beef beyond your unrealistic and unreasonable fear?

I didn't find it all that impossible to decipher.

Took an hour and ten minutes to obtain and check out with a black powder revolver that was treated as Cabela's does modern firearms. E.g.: kept behind the gun counter and walked out to the front door by store personnel. Kind of annoying as they could just put those out on the shelves and there's no paperwork or background check -- but that's Cabela's policy I guess.

For some reason it does not appear to have come in a box. (Was this a used gun?)

So the OP was left walking from the store to his car with a revolver in his hand and that made him nervous because he apparently didn't have a holster for it, or any other way to carry it.

I'd say the moral here is to buy a gun rug or case if your new gun doesn't come with a box, so you don't end up walking through the parking lot with a gun in your hand.

...

I will admit I'm a little surprised they didn't at least offer you a plastic shopping bag to carry it out in. Did you ask the manager for one when she handed you the gun?

my bad

New Gun that supposedly they had 11 of, BP PIetta 1858. They couldn't find the box, the normal procedure is they hand you the box and you take it up front and pay for it and leave.

What I got - instead of just finding another box or making one they send me to firearms checkout, after waiting in line there and paying for it the clerk puts a muzzle flag and trigger lock on it. She escorts me to the firearms check in at front door, trigger lock and flag are removed, they just hand it to me.

Now it's not a firearm but willfully concealing it at this point could be criminal in Delaware because if you don't think somebody will rule it a weapon you're mistaken. Only other option is to walk across parking lot with it in hand. Not a good option in NCC.

Unreasonable fear? That's New Castle Delaware where open carry is legal and it's a verifiable fact that a call of 'man with a gun' will be sorted out after a felony stop is initiated. Public records are kept of 911 calls, people up there will really call it in for a firearm legally openly carried on your dashboard or in a holster, let alone in hand.

I know they respond with a felony stop because my wife's cousin is retired from that department. So I'll take your condescending comments as a good guy having a bad moment.

Oh yeah well the bb gun guy was clearly justifiable standing there on his cell phone not pointing it at anyone.
Yeah, had I done that anywhere I worked I would be posting in the DIY archery forum to get my shooting kicks legally.

Edited to add, had a rug or holster been available I would have bought it. honestly once they decided how to sell me the Pietta WITHOUT THE BOX they kind of herded me out of there like you weren't welcome after purchasing or something. I asked them to give me just any box many times and no matter how much I beefed they would not call a manager to talk to me.
It isn't me I'm worried about. I have survived multiple contacts with police while armed in uniform and as a civilian. Not everybody has that skill set. A first time buyer in that situation who didn't look like a sedate middle aged dude could get really messed up in the same situation, like if he was on his phone and didn't realize a cop was telling him to do something.

So you can start rank on me if it makes you feell tough or something, i'm sincere in this warning and would rather work out the sordid details with Cabela's so we can be friends in the future. Again - BE CAREFUL, DON"T LET INEXPERIENCED FOLKS GO THERE ALONE.

I didn't say boycott, never again, or anything like that. I'm saying this went down, it could put somebody in a bad situation. It may reflect an attitude towards guns and people that buy them or it could just be a random occurrence, a mistake in good faith.

That's not what I'm getting at. LET ME TYPE SLOWLY THIS TIME _

IN THE NAME OF SAFETY THEY WILL TREAT YOUR REPLICA NON FFL PURCHASE AND YOU AS IF DANGEROUS TO THE PUBLIC THEN WALK YOU TO THE FRONT DOOR AND PLACE YOU IN DANGER - I SHOULDN"T HAVE TO ASK FOR THE REVOLVER TO BE WRAPPED AS A PARCEL. I JUST LEFT AT THAT POINT BECAUSE OF A HIGH LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE THAT i COULD DO SO SAFELY. RECENT EVENTS MAY TEND TO INDICATE THAT NOT ALL PERSONS WHO ARE HOLDING WHAT LOOKS LIKE A GUN IN A RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT DO SURVIVE SUCH A CONTACT FOR WHATEVER REASON.

Now my initial post was in English clearly stated I didn't really want to got tick by tick here and gave a clear general warning. Act like you can't comprehend that if you want to re-enforce stereotypes of gun owners. ;)

Or ... asking for a bag. They give those away, you know. They're usually dark green plastic. Two handles. Says, "Cabela's" in nice script on both sides.

:D

(Or just ask to buy a $5 pistol rug, or $10 hard case?)

Seems like there was a REALLY easy answer, or three, right there, if ya had your brain in gear. You get the "new gun fever" or somethin? :neener:

Just goofin', but really this was a TOTAL non-issue, so I understand why the guys are messin' with you.

Yes!

That was my first thought- why not ask for a bag? I'm sure they would have gladly handed the OP one.

To say nothing of the matter of perspective or context: How many folks standing around a Cabela's parking lot are going to make a M.W.G. call to the local po-po on some dood walking out of the store with a cap&ball revolver. It isn't like you were wandering into the local McDonald's waving it around.

Ok. I'm going to close this on that note, as I don't think there's anything served by having the whole forum poke you over and over.

Thank you for the warning.
