Looking for input from anyone experienced with Longshot powder, particularly in pistols.

Show some pretty good data for 180 gn in .40 and 10mm, and even in .45.

Just never used it and looking for input. It's gotta meter better than my 800x!!!

IMO Longshot is the best 40 S&W or 10mm powder around.

I have also used Longshot for .38 Special +P ammo and it's real good in high end 124gr 9mm ammo but 40 S&W/10mm is where it shines.

It is good for high velocity loads with some calibers, and is popular for that, but they should have named it Loudshot.

Love to hear it!

How does it meter and burn?

Have traditionally used Unique in my .40 and 800x in my 10mm but looking to get away from both.

Meters like water. Not too dirty of a powder, but that seems to depend on how light/heavy the load is in my experience.

You will like Longshot a lot more than either Unique or 800X. Longshot meters much better than either too. (but like said above, it is loud)

Great info guys! Thanks as always! Pick up some on the way home tomorrow.

I have worked up to case failure with 200 gr in 10mm. Nothing to write home about.
I have worked up to case failure with 200 gr in 40sw. Nothing to write home about.
I have worked up to case full with 9x19 with 158 gr, no big deal.
I have worked up to case full with 9x23 with 147 gr and 158 gr no big deal.
I have worked up to case failure 124 gr in 357 Sig, nothing to write home about.
I split the cylinder or a 38 special 158 gr. no big deal.
I split the cylinder and broke the frame on another 38 special 158 gr. High speed Shcrapnel.
I split the cylinder and top strap on a 32 S&W long 85 gr. No big deal.
I worked up to case failure in 7.62x25mm with 110 gr. No big power.
I know there was a light bullet 38 Super load that I got less and less velocity with more and more powder, but I can't find it right now.

I am done with the powder.
It looks good in data books, but it never puts out the power of Power Pistol.
I have never come close to finding a useful load with Longshot. It just can't compete with Power Pistol, despite what load books say.

This place is great. I was getting ready to load Nosler 180's and thought I would see what other's had to say. I did a little brushing up and found longshot loads from 6.4 to 9.7 /WLP /1.250-1.260 and that was for Hor. XTP . 950 -1400 fps. Wow what a variable. I don't believe I will do the max. load ....call me a sissy but I like my hands the way they are now.
Glad to hear its meters well.
I've loaded AA#7 & 800x all hand loaded ...one by one especially the 800x and have had great success with both powders but I just want to play around a little more to get that ultimate and trusted progressive load rolling. Can't wait to see how things work out.

I've found it to be superlative in the 9x19 with cast bullets. I use a 122gr Lee TC over 5.2gr of LongShot. It gives 1,200fps from my 6" PPC-9 and ~2" groups at 50yds...
From my 5906PC, I get 1,150fps and similar accuracy. I also use 5.5gr with a 115gr Hornady XTP for my 5" PPC-9. Also delivers 1,200+fps from 4"bbl. It's a tad slower burning than SuperField and gives much better performance from the 9mm with cast bullets. I haven't noticed that it is any louder in my appplication.

I did notice that I didn't/don't get quite the velocity noted in the Hodgdon data with the .40S&W. I get such good performace from the .40 with SuperField that I just stick with it in the .40.
I haven't loaded for the 10mm in 20yrs now. When I did, I used AAC#7......

I like it and will switch between Longshot (BOOM) and Power Pistol (FLASH) depending on what's available and whether I feel like tall skinny bottles or short squat ones.

They are absolutely my go-to powders for 10mm because they meter so well and move those bullets quickly. Probably the only other nice-metering powder in their league is AA9, but I haven't tried it.

THR!!! The "one stop shop" for great info! Many thanks guys!

I use Longshot in 180gr 40cal and 147gr 9mm. 8.0gr is as high as I go in the 40 and 4.7gr in the 9mm. Both have noticably more umph then factory loadings, expect brass to be thrown 30 feet, but still no pressure signs due to it's slow burning nature.

I load all my 10mm, .40, 9mm, and 38 spcl with Longshot. It's a fantastic powder for higher end loads in those cartridges. As for how it meter's, I couldn't tell ya, I charge cases individually with a scale. It's a pretty flakey powder though, so i would imagine it wouldn't meter all that great.

HS6 is another pretty nice powder and it might meter better, but I haven't used it for 10mm so I can't say how well it performs in that application?

Longshot meters as well as the best-metering small-flake powders out there--which is to say within +/- 0.1 grain in a stock Dillon or Hornady powder drop.

(This is coming from someone who has never been able to get Unique to measure within +/- 0.1 pound....)

Picked up 2 #s of Longhsot today and one more of Unique. But they were out of primers..

But they were out of primers..
Who among us didn't see that coming?

I'm just glad I stocked up on primers and powder before the last shortage and over the past 4 years when I saw components on sale. I never bought a lot at once because I just don't have that kind of money but I did buy 2,000 or 3,000 primers when the price was right instead of only 1,000 at a time.

(yes, everything is stored safely and in compliance with all local laws)

The fellow who sells powder and primer at the gun shows here had plenty of powder and primers. The price was the same as usual last time. That was the weekend before the election. It will be interesting to see how he has them priced next time. If he raises the price, I will do like the last time, and not buy them. This little mini run won't last.

My experience with Longshot was in the 9MM with cast bullets and for me it delivered excellent accuracy at high velocities. The 121 Lee truncated cone at 1250 fps+ and Lee 150 2R @ 1000 fps+ with groups 2" or less at 25 yds out of a stock Browning Hipower. IMO if you want high velocity and accuracy with cast bullets in the 9MM, Longshot is the way to go.

I clocked 1183 FPS using 8.1grs of LS and a 180XTP out of my 4" USP 40. You'll prolly get 1100-1150 FPS out of a 3.5" barrel.

Old thread, new confirms!

Again, thanks to all that have chimed in on this thread!

Have now built about 200 rds of .40 with Zero 180 gn JHPs over 7.2 gns LongShot.
This is about midway on the load data for this round. Hogdon call for 6.5 to 8 gns.
This powder runs very well through the Dillon 550b powder system. Maintains approx
+-.1 gns for me. After shooting I found the barrel and other parts to be substantially cleaner than using Unique. And yes, it does throw the brass further!

Case bulging (G22 gen2) seems to be reduced a tad. Need more time with this powder/these loads for better surety. And next time out will have chrono to know better where these are really at.

Also built some .45 rounds with Berrys 230 gn RN, over 6.2 gns LongShot (factory says 6 to 6.8 gns) and was very happy with them being shot from my 1911. Consistant groups, cleaner than Unique...

Unique had always been my goto powder to keep from having to stock 4 or 5 different powders. LongShot has replaced my Unique for most and ceratinly 800x for my 10mm rounds. I do believe I will continue to use TiteGroup for my 115-124 gn 9mms as it also meters very nicely but costs a little less in powder weight.

Overall, LongShot has reduced my need for powder stock from 4 brands to 2. I REALLY like 800x in 10mm but just can't see hand weighing every charge when there is an option like LongShot!

Live well, shoot straight!

Okay as Ex has stated we've loaded and launched some long shot. His Glock was absolutely spotless. My Ruger with it's 3.5 barrel was filthy with unburnded powder left behind. The rounds were 7.2 grs of long shot shoving 180 gr JHP's!! No chrono unfortunately!! What can we do to clean up the load for my short barrel. Any input would be appreciated!!

If you haven't ever held the SR40c Ruger, you are in for a sweet surprise. It has an amazing trigger!! And it's American made!!! Right here in Arizona to be exact!!!

I shot some 8.0gr, max loads through a 3.8" Springfield barrel, not issues at all other then the brass knocking down low flying aircraft. Cleanup was quick and easy no excess fouling or carbon.

I've run max loads of LS through two different XDM's, and that was what got me stuck on LS for the .40 cal.. No dount the best powder I've ever used for .40 ca., especially if you like em nice and stout. And accuracy was exceptional too!
