I have been looking at the Winchester load data site looking for a hot load to use for my Montana Gold 185g. HP's. According to Winchester 8.2 grains of Longshot powder will push a 185g. bullet to 1044 fps. I use Longshot for my 10mm and it meters very well and works great. I have never heard of anyone using it in .45acp. Does anyone here us it and what results have you got using it? Thanks, Sammy

Longshot's a bit slow for the low pressure .45 ACP with a burn rate around the Blue Dot/AA7 speed. I've tried both Blue Dot and AA7 in the .45 and neither will develop enough pressure seal the case in the chamber or to burn clean enough to not leave blackened cases. You may get better results with Longshot but I doubt it.

I load 185gr JHP Remington bulk on top of 7.7gr of Unique and get a measured average velocity of 1,093 fps from my Colt Combat Commander and 1,060 fps from my Sig 220. Max load is 8.2grs according to current Alliant data.

I used Long Shot with my bolt-action .45 ACP and got up to 1,850 fps with a 185 grain Gold Dot, but I don't recommend you try that in any pistol...

Well, it sure is noisy. And it sure delivers velocity when loaded according to the manuals. But it's not useful for mid-level rounds, just the hot stuff. Stick to published data.

I have used HS-6 with 185 gr. Hornady HP/XTP Using the data I got from a Hodgdons manual in the +P section. Supposed to get 1200+ using 10 grains. Don't use in a 1911 without using a heavier spring, or any .45 acp pistol thats not rated for +P ammo. LM

I didn't care for Longshot for the .45 Auto either. I did however get good results using HS-6 and Universal but most of my .45 Auto rounds are still made with W231.

I worked up a load using a 200 XTP over 7.8 grains of Longshot, OAL 1.220. Velocity average was about 930 fps out of my XD with a four inch barrel. Burned clean, accuracy was excellent. This is the upper end of the published loads from Hodgdon, but the accuracy over loads at 7.0, 7.3 & 7.6 was noticeable.
