Austin Gun Show (1-2 Dec)

I'm definitely going to this show.

I do not care for saxet, so hopefully this will be better.

I wouldn't expect quite the vendor quantity. The North Austin Event Center is not that big of a facility compared to the Freeman Expo Halls in San Antonio. I've actually been thinking of heading up for the show. I always like going to the Premier show in San Antonio. As other stated, they attract unique vendors to their shows that SAXET and Texas Gun Shows don't have. I find myself skipping SAXET and Texas shows regularly because of vendor redundancy/burnout.

It won't be nearly as big as the Freeman Expo show, but it beats seeing mostly the same folks with mostly the same stuff that we see every month at the SAXET show here in SA!

The bigger issue is for the folks in the Austin area, if support for this show isn't shown then it won't likely last long. Premier is taking a chance as the market in Austin is not nearly as good as it is in SA or DFW, plus the history of gun shows in that city isn't exactly stellar.

The SAXET show there is doing OK at best, and if it goes away and this one doesn't last, the firearms community in Austin will be left with their overpriced shops or driving several hours to go to a show! :barf:

We are only driving up to show our support, and hopefully get others to do the same. I honestly don't expect more than 300-400 tables and since I just bought a Springfield XD(M) earlier this month, my gun fund is pretty low at the moment; but that usually seems like the times I find some great deal on a gun I didn't know I wanted! :neener:

Cheers! M2

We went this morning, there was a good-sized crowd waiting for the doors to open. We ended up talking to the first vendor inside, the guy with the StG44 Sturmgewehr on display. He recently acquired some pristine WWI German daggers and showed them to me and my son. Dang, they were impressive.

We walked around for a little over an hour talking to various vendors, there was a pretty good selection at the show but we didn't find anything I needed so we left empty-handed. That could be attributed to the fact that the same folks are putting on the larger San Antonio show next weekend, and I didn't want to spend what little remains of my "mad money."

Still, it was a good turnout and a great showing of vendors. It was worth the drive up from SA and anyone in the Austin area should definitely check out this show!

Cheers! M2

45 min to close, they're still charging full price? No thanks. If I have a couple hours to kill tomorrow, we'll see.

I went just after noon. Plenty of folks shopping and the venders seemed busy enough. Prices on guns were typical. The vendor near the door to the right had the biggest variety of pistols and some decent prices. I picked up an M&P9c for a fair price. Almost pulled the trigger on a few others but decided against it. It was a good show and I'd go back when they come back.

I went today. Agree with Shuler13 - crowd seemed good, prices were typical (no screaming deals, but seemed fair for the most part). Good variety and I enjoyed seeing some different vendors than those that come to Saxet. Yes, the vendor to the right at the entrance had just about everything you could want. Except of course a Smith & Wesson Shield.

I was very tempted on a Marlin 30-30 and a couple of other things but had to resist because Christmas is coming.

I hope we can support two shows in Austin.

Time for a rant. If you're going to have a table at the show, PLEASE mark your items with the make, model, caliber and asking price. I saw three or four tables today that appeared to be private sellers (would be nice to have a sign that so indicated, also) with various firearms laid out with no signage whatsoever.

One guy had a row of what appeared to be stainless Smith & Wesson revolvers turned in by the Austin PD, but nothing was marked. He was busy talking to a buddy the first two or three times I stopped by and made no attempt to acknowledge me. I finally broke in and asked "what caliber are these" and he said "38-44", which I didn't really understand. Were some .38? Were some .44? They all looked the same to me, and none looked big enough for a .44 but what do I know? He immediately went back to talking to his buddy and I walked away. I have no idea what he wanted for them and I didn't feel it was my place to interrupt him again to ask. So I moved on.

Another guy had a number of rifles laid out. Three of them were lever action. I was in the market today for a 30-30 but nothing was marked, so I had to ask and turns out they were all something else. He then started talking about either the benefits, or pitfalls, of the 30-30 round but I couldn't understand him clearly, so I politely said "thanks" and moved on. Out of curiosity if nothing else, I would have been interested in knowing what make each gun was and what his asking price was, but since I was specifically looking for a 30-30 and knew I wouldn't buy one of his, I didn't bother asking him.

That's all. Thanks for listening.

^regarding this^

customer service is desperately lacking in most businesses, especially the gun business and overall I've found customer service in most places in Austin to be pretty terrible.

That being said, I made it out to the show today too.

It was... "aight". Didn't buy anything, tried to buy a case of MREs (sign indicated cases or singles), guy was all sold out but nice about it. Plan to catch him at the SAXET show.

I too hope that ATX can support 2 shows. Relatively cheap entertainment and will be nice to stop by and pick up some odds and ends now and again.

next door was the REAL treat! Wow! Will be going back there for sure!

Many of the "private dealers" are not there to sell. They are there so they can go back home and say "Honey I tried to sell them but you know the way the economy is nobody had money to buy".

Also...a lot of guys really are at a gun SHOW not a gun sale. You can usually tell those guys. Its all good though. Did see some fair prices and nothing outrageous.

Scott,

Apparently you were looking @ chromed .38"-44 S&W revolvers. The .38"-44 or .38/44 was a pre .357" Magnum round. I'm not aware of any being produced after S&W introduced stainless.

Got there Saturday morning a little before 10:00 AM. Good but not outrageous crowd - tables were spaced further apart than when the SAXET show used to be there, so fewer vendors. Admission $8.

The guy with the StG ("Not for sale") by the entrance had some Lugers that looked interesting, but seemed just a bit high for their condition. I've been looking for a Luger for a while and wanted to have a closer look and maybe haggle a bit, but he was jawing with one of his buddies behind the table with him and clearly had no interest in talking to a potential buyer, so I moved on.

Saw lot of EBRs.

Guy was cleaning eyeglasses with some blue anti-fog paste - sounded like the typical snake-oil salesman, but I let him clean my glasses - when I got them back, I had to take out my handkerchief and wipe off the smears. (I didn't buy his stuff.)

Another guy had a Savage/Stevens BE double - for $995! Much too high. Along with everything else on his table.

Saw a case full of Pythons for sale (including a NOT FOR SALE .41 Mag) but with prices around $2400 - $2600 the guy must have been on crack.

Heard a number of conversations . . .

At the ammo guy in back, someone was bluntly telling him "Your case prices are at least $100 more than the on-line prices - and shipping isn't as high as the sales tax you charge." The discussion seemed to be getting a little animated as I moved on. ;)

Two guys walking together: "I just bought that same rifle a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't pay near what he's asking."

"These guys are sure asking a lot."

Guy was selling jewelry, had a woman customer who wanted to buy something in front of his table, but he couldn't figure out what he was charging.

Saw a decent looking 4" M-28, but the seller couldn't seem to make up his mind whether it was $825 or $875. (He was talking to another customer.) Nothing on his table was marked . . .

Which was the problem already mentioned - LOTS of tables with no prices or descriptions - and a lot the vendors didn't seem to have any interest in talking to potential customers.

I left empty handed.

Interesting. I wasn't even aware that there was such a thing. Thanks for the info!

Any ballpark idea what one of those might go for?
