Looks like I am going to pick up a 4" 681 with good year grips the guys wife wants it out of the house after the Conn. shooting $375.00 was thinking of maybe cutting it down to 3" Opinions on the gun and cutting the barrel please!!

That is very good price if the gun is in very good or excellent condition. Offer $350. Cutting back perfectly good 4" barrel is pretty much stupid thing to do.

As much as I prefer a 3 in. over a 4 in. I have spent enough years carrying a 4 in. to learn that it's really not that much of a big deal. If you really NEED a 3 in. gun then trade into one.

I would grab a $450 681 and spend the $125 I saved on it to have it chopped to 3".
Send it to Pinnacle High performance, Mark does great work.
Have him dove tail a 1/10" front sight with a gold bead on that thing, then have it round butted.
You will never find a much better carry gun around.

I would not reduce 4" barrel especially on .357magnum. The $375 is buy now price.

$375 is an awesome price for one. Around these parts, that would be an easy $500 gun when they show up (which is rare).

I would buy it at that price and keep it as is. They aren't making any more of them. If I wanted a three inch gun I would buy a Model 13, they seem to have perfect balance.

If the seller is a friend, then I would offer to buy it and sell it back to him when he divorces his wife. A woman who thinks I am a danger to others because I am armed is not someone I would spend another day with. The lack of trust is too profound.
If its because she truly thinks she would snap, then its time to leave & take any kids.

I got a 3" 13 and your right it does have great balance. No the seller is not a friend going to look at the gun on Monday

I am just a little concerned about the fixed sights on a 4" gun. I just realized I don't have a 4" revolver got a bunch of 2 1/2", 3", 5" and 6" guns but no 4". I would think these would shoot to POA pretty good. Just remembered the 5 screw pre 18 is a 4"

Are you under 50? If so, the fixed sights will likely be dead on for you.

From what i have discovered, once you turn 50 or so, your arms apparently start to get shorter and the fixed sights start to get a little harder to see clearly......

sigh......

S&W 681 non locked gun for $375.00? buy it and dont look back.

Jump on it! DON'T cut it!

I can hit the iron silhouette targets @ 150 yards (off hand) w/ mine.

I'll be 57 tomorrow and wear tri-focals.

The model 681 is my favorite L-frame. It took me a long time before I found mine. It is a 681(No dash #)and is pictured below:

Is there an "M" stamped in the frame inside the yoke cutout? Near the model number.

Forget cutting the barrel

BIG,

I used to carry a 681 as a duty gun. $375.00 sounds a little high, but then they do not make them anymore, either.

Save the barrel cutting money which will really only give you a gun with lower muzzle velocity, worse flash, louder noise and less control.

Send the gun to MAGNA PORT, have the barrel ported and let them do an action slick. It will come back as a WONDERFUL and VERY CAPABLE combat revolver. I know, because I have their action job and ports on my L frames.

Jim

Actually what you should do and we forgot to tell you is to get a couple of thousand round thru that thing before decide what you modifications you should do. When it has some wear marks you will know what you want.

Cutting the barrel an inch will be similar to Mag-n-porting for velocity loss. Shooting a couple of thousand rounds will smooth out the action and save you some money on an action job and if you dry fire at all that adds to the smoothness.

Great guns, I wish S&W made more of them in more configurations i.e. 2 & 3 inch barrels, round and square butts, 357mag, 40 S&W and even 41 special.
