I have a 4" 686 and M13, and I love them both. If you're carrying for duty, 1" is inconsequential, and for CC, they're all a little fluffy but you can live with either 3" or 4". I can stuff my 5" M&P down my pants and the extra length helps keep it from falling out - I guess I just love 'em all, the long, the short & the tall...
